Square-Enix posts annual revenues up, MMO revenues down with ‘brisk’ subs ahead of FFXIV expansion

We know what we know.

More companies with MMOs and MMO-adjacent games dropped financials this week.

At Square-Enix, net sales for the the year were up 8%, though for MMOs specifically – including Final Fantasy XIV – revenues were down slightly YOY. “Net sales and operating income decreased compared to the prior fiscal year, which had seen the launch of expansion packages for Final Fantasy XIV and Dragon Quest X, but recurring subscription revenue remained brisk,” the letter to investors says. Since 2019 is an expansion year for FFXIV, one might assume a year from now the MMO report will be much improved.

Even if it’s down, there is apparently a trend to it which I would assume means Square expected their financials (hopefully) to represent the small dip from the alternating peak. And I hope one would also note how, despite being in the downward swing the graph shows, the growth is strong even there…

Because the last thing I want to see is Square reverting to the shoot-foot-put-in-mouth sort they can most definitely be. I still recall the Tomb Raider reboot’s release in 2013 selling 3.4 million in less than a month, and yet that was seen as a ‘major failure’.

Well subscriptions would be in a lull right now because it’s still a month and a half or so before Shadowbringers, like a handful of my friends all let their subs expire and are just waiting til then to reactivate.

Most likely? The game being in ‘maintenance mode’ for them is likely why. Long as the game covers expenses for itself, they aren’t likely expecting to see any noteworthy numbers come out of it and don’t feel a need to report it as part of their revenue.

I imagine that between there being no more expansions and the fact that the playerbase is probably pretty small that it’s not a statistically relevant source of revenue worth breaking out. Even if it’s profitable due to low overhead for the title.

Given the continuous updates still made to the game, one could be forgiven for thinking it was in active development.

The April FFXIV free login campaign won me back from a four-year absence, and I just canceled by WoW subscription. I am looking forward to Shadowbringers. If a Viera plays the Gunbreaker job, is she a Bunbreaker?
