Torchlight Frontiers’ alpha plans major skill and leveling overhaul for May 21

Perfect World and Echtra Games are continuing efforts on Torchlight Frontiers’ alpha, announcing this week that the next big patch is coming to testers a week from today on May 21st. At the heart of the update are multiple changes to skills and leveling in the game.

“The impetus comes straight out of player feedback: skill progression was unclear and the pacing felt off,” Echtra explains. “We took a step back and asked ourselves what principles we’d use to guide us during a revamp.” Those principles are pacing, planning, and scalability. Under the new system,

“Players now earn one Skill Point for every Frontier Level they gain up to a maximum of 100. These points are invested on two unique skill paths for each class: Brawl/Barrage for Forged, Dark/Light for Dusk Mage, and Lineage/Conductor for Railmaster. Skills on each path are divided among tiers. You’ll need to invest points in previous skills and tiers, as indicated by the tool tip, before you gain access to later tiers. You can invest a maximum of 12 points in each skill; in some cases, the point investment also synergistically boosts other aspects of your class’s strengths.”

PWE and Echtra also explain that a character’s skill progression will be directly linked to level, and to make all that flow properly, the studios have doubled experience gain for chests and bosses, plus rebalanced all of the level ranges in the game’s current zones. “Once the system is in players’ hands, we’ll roll their evaluations and assessments into the next wave of iteration and improvement,” they write.

I’m having a really weird error where the game server barely sends me any data now for like a full minute or so every time I zone (sometimes longer). It’s not something at my end throttling it, nothing on my end changed, the data isn’t stopped, it just is barely trickling in at tiny amounts. My ping is fine. My upload to the server is fine. Just the server is barely sending me any info anymore for a few minutes after zoning.

It had a slight issue like this during earlier testing periods, but it was over in a number of seconds rather than minutes. Now it is really bad and lasts a long time. It is game stopping – so I hope for their sake it’s not happening to that many people.

I’ve filed some online reports but I know as a tester it’s my duty to try harder to let them know about the issue where they can respond to me and where I can work with them on it. I will try and do so.

Does this change the weird progression thing where you essentially started over in each Frontier?

No. Those aren’t player skills, those are frontier levels. And realistically they are fine the way they are, if they want to leave it open for player choice of which to do first anyway.

After seeing the train class I am watching this game with interest. I am curious how it will hold up against other ARPG offerings out there, both paid and free

Right now the train isn’t great. It has a medium-small attack radius which would be fine if it aggroed enemies. But many boss-ish enemies run away from the train, which means laying more track. This in turn wouldn’t be so bad either, except for the fact that the train moves very slowly.

I’m so happy they went back to torchlight 2 skill tree.

But the skill tree is the worst thing about these games.
