Final Fantasy XIV previews the all-important updates coming to Mahjong for Shadowbringers

But then Bart said 'this is stupid' and stopped so I won!

It seems like Shadowbringers is just around the corner (to the extent that 42 days is “just around the corner”) and Final Fantasy XIV players the world over are looking forward to updates to the most vital of all game elements: mahjong. What do you mean you wanted to hear about the benchmark or job actions? That’s silly. What you want are mahjong updates. And let’s be real, they’re pretty nice updates.

Want to see your opponent’s faces during mahjong? The update offers that as an option, along with letting you emote in the hopes of throwing your opponents off their game. You’ll also have the option to cancel calls and a status display indicating when you are unable to make certain calls. If you’re in an awful slump in terms of having risen above where you can effectively play, you can also reset your rating and ranking back to the base. It’s all a nice addition to the Gold Saucer, and something to look forward to as you await information from the now-ongoing media tour.

How about a good tutorial? last i tried it just kind of throws you into it while all the other Gold Saucer games have some kind of solid introduction.

Have you been to the Mahjong Tutor? The one at the NPC tables?

She’s got the complete description of how it works.

Surprised they’re doing anything for that mode given almost no one touches it, probably getting it in a spot similar to Lord of Verminion. The game has such a stupid barrier entry and the in-game help files don’t do enough to actually tell you how to play or what to do. Matches can last for hours, and the whole thing just feels like it wasn’t meant to be played by anyone but those who actually are hardcore into Mahjong or really want to learn it and deal with the random nonsense that is the ridiculously designed rules for that game.

From what I understand this was a passion project for the team. I’m pretty happy it’s in the game, just knowing is good for me

I think you’re overstating the complexity of the rules just a bit. If you can handle a card game like Rummy, you’re about 75% of the way there (considering both games largely rely on either identical sets or sequential sets, it’s an apt comparison).

The game also handles the more complex rules, such as scoring and preventing illegal moves.

Of all the things they’ve added into the game…
Mahjong is the one I do not touch with a ten-foot pole. Even in the Yakuza series, where I could solve all of my problems with ten foot poles, Mahjong has consistently mocked and broken me, even with cheat items included! I will fish, I will hunt bears and spear fish, I will craft and run rampant trying to get rare things… I will even play with pocket-sized toys.

But in Yakuza and now Final Fantasy 14, Mahjong will stand atop and far above all in the game.

I don’t think I even knew there was mahjong at the Gold Saucer. I need to resubscribe so I can move some tile.

I am pondering whether MOP could use a sarcasm tag, or if it is adequately indicated by Eliot’s byline.

Will the benchmark include abilities for the new jobs?
