Final Fantasy XIV releases job action trailer, benchmarks, and 16M player count ahead of Shadowbringers

Warping shadow.

The gates have not yet been thrown wide for Final Fantasy XIV’s third expansion, Shadowbringers, but players can now see what’s on the other side pretty clearly. Yesterday’s Letter from the Producer Live covered the game’s battle system changes in detail, and they are extensive. No more DPS stances for tanks, which are now given a pure tank stance to draw enmity. Extensive changes to pets. The addition of charges to actions. There are helpful summaries available, since there’s a whole lot of stuff going down at once.

But if you don’t want to read about all of it, you can enjoy yourself with the new job action trailer just below, showing off the actions sported by every one of the jobs including the upcoming Gunbreaker and Dancer. You can also catch a glimpse of the Viera and Hrothgar in the action trailer… or you can make one for yourself with the new benchmark available now, allowing you to both test your system performance and play around with character creation for the new races. So yes, you do have a month left to wait, but this should help take the edge off.

The game also hit the 16 million registered player mark, which is a pretty impressive new high-water mark for registered accounts (how many are currently playing actively is not known). Also, players are told to keep track of their tomestones ahead of the patch 5.0 deployment, as the currency will be changing with the expansion launch.

I was hoping for a change on melee so they do not need positional attacks any more… I love playing melee character but I hate this gameplay of Flank – rear – flank etc.. and they forced this gameplay to ALL melee dps.

I heard that this expansion will have lot of changes in battle system and I was hoping but no… no change to positional attacks

Honestly, that’d make melee so brainless and dull that I (And I’ve heard the opinion echoed by others) would stop playing melee outright.

So almost in 99% of MMOs melee are brainless and dull?

In 99% of MMO’s, combat isn’t similar to XIV.

And yes, most MMO combat is dull.

In all tab target MMOs combat is the same as FFXIV.. you have buffs/debuffs/procs/cooldowns/charges/GCD. I didnt know FFXIV found the solution for all tab target games melee to become fun instead of dull…

I understand is personal opinion. Besides I didnt ask to remove positionals from every melee in FFXIV.. but not have same mechanic to ALL melees.

I’m eager to see how Summoner plays out, as it used to be my favorite class before it became so convoluted to play with Stormbringers. Machinist looks really neat. I’m a sucker for pet classes and I like the idea of the robot pet they get. While I’ve mained White Mage for several years, I want to pull away from playing healers and dive into Dancer / Summoner. I can’t really say for sure until I try both of them out.

Played around with the new classes on Benchmark. I do like the Hothgar, although I won’t play them. The more I played with Viera, the more I wasn’t really feeling them. The Hothgar look like a true fantasy class, right up to the customization with their fur pattern, horns, teeth, colorating, tattoos, etc. I can’t help but feel Viera were a pure fan service addition. It’s just a humanoid body with no customization features, except from the neck up. That’s what felt disappointing.

ff14 is now starting to look like a proper final fantasy game. Instead of being a wow-clone.

Is it me or did the combat look faster in the video than on live?

Hard to tell at first glance.

Seems about the same on a job per job basis if you account for the fact that we don’t know what abilities (new and old) are off the GCD. In addition to not knowing traits and if something provides an additional buff of sorts. The new jobs in general are a mystery on this front (the Gunbreaker seemed to pick up speed a bit at the end).

Monk is definitely faster since they have a 40% Haste buff now, and Ninja is about that fast on live with their own haste buff and the fact that their abilities look flashy and quick / the shadow image they get and use at the end of their showcase.

It seems like Bard’s songs and a new ability or two were off the global, which allowed them to frequently cast back to back. Not to mention their procs were probably as such as well, in addition to (I think) them saying procs are more reliable to get with songs now.

Samurai definitely got a new off global or two, along with double Modare and the ability to instantly charge Kenki. The Kenki charge ability seems to now have an attack added to it to make it more useful other than just using it when a boss is charging for an attack or switching phases.

Summoner’s summons are now instant casts and don’t require casting time. Their summons also have their attacks changed, and are instant. The prime summons also seem to have instant attacks that might be off the global. Their Aetherflow instantly refills to 2 at the start of the fight.

Paladin now has a gap closer and their Holy Spirit and Clemency are instant cast and potentially off the global. This is likely made possible to the changes made to TP (meaning its gone now) and MP (able to drain it more with the heal, similar to PVP — but just a guess).

Machinist was completely reworked to the point they said it’s practically a new job in itself.

They mentioned the flow of Black Mage was a little better in the expansion when compared to live.

The same was said with Red Mage. Red mage also has an ability to instantly refill their balance meter with a melee attack, and they started with 50/50 in the trailer… which may mean it refills to that point when out of combat. It’s being thought that you no longer need to backflip anymore to perform the final spells and something else is being added for when you want to stay engaged or don’t have room for such.

MCH changes sound interesting, though I’d like to see more of what MNK has had changed since they claimed they were looking at it heavily as well.

The changes look good on paper, playing with them will be the true test. Actually excited to see how SMN plays with rotating pets, and not having to weave DA on DRK anymore will hopefully make it feel less constricted.

Still wish we were getting a new healer, but if the changes to WHM are sufficient maybe it will at least get me through to 6.x

^I posted my very long comments on the whole thing there but to sum it up its mostly very exciting but also reads like their changes to Healers might set them up for the very issues they are trying to resolve with Tanks at the same time which seems very strange. Also i wonder if AST is being simplified for the people who found the cards too complex to spite those of us who enjoy the current system and i’ve been down that road before with MMO’s. At least in this case i have all jobs capped and its a simple touch of a button to swap rather than rerolling another character.

Ever since healer DPS really became a thing, I’ve argued that “more interesting” healing options would be better than a healer spamming 1..maybe 2 dps spells so I’m pretty happy about the change.

I am curious as to what piety is going to do now and how that 10k MP cap is going to work.
