The Daily Grind: What is your favorite MMO enemy faction and why?

One of the more bits of brilliant design in City of Heroes is that there is such a diverse and distinct array of enemy factions. Over the course of the game, you really do get a feel for each group’s “personality,” and at least in my case, I became affectionate toward some of them. I guess when you fight an enemy often enough, the ones that amuse you and play on your sympathies can become frenemies of a sort, even if only in your mind.

Assuming that you’ve encountered a group or two like that over the years in your MMOs that you’ve taken a liking, I’d love to hear about it today. Which enemy faction became your favorite to encounter — and why? Did they make you laugh? Give the best loot? Die the quickest? Have the best animations?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Oh, my favorite villain faction is the devs. Always changing stuff just as soon as I have it figured out. “Balancing for PvP” even though I rarely PvP and am affected by their changes. At least the CoH devs managed to split out *some* (not all) of their changes to abilities in PvP.

In CoH, the Carnival of Light and its splinter factions. Because who doesn’t love a good (evil) carnival!

Malta Operatives in CoH. They’re a bunch of sneaky debuffing and mezzing little sh*•s. But I love the challenge of them nonetheless, especially with my Stone Tank.

My favorite MMO is (still, somehow, after 16 years) FFXI. Not all the factions are winners but there are many amusing ones. My favorite is probably the goblins. Vicious little buggers who can also be friendly NPCs. They’re kind of adorable even as they’re chasing after you and killing your whole party

I too have been playing a lot of CoX lately, but I love to hate Clanfears in ESO. If I could kill every last one of these hateful, evil intestine nibblers I would. Don’t think I haven’t tried.

You’d think that with some of my higher cp characters I would find clanfears beneath me, but friends know that no quest, raid, or dungeon is important enough for me to not kill a dozen or so of these things.

I hadn’t really thought about this much in mmo’s, as most of the time the enemies are kind of cookie cutter generic that exist to provide the player with a casus belli to fight, examples being the convenient GW2 enemies like the Inquest, Nightmare Court, Sons of Svanir, etc.

That said, two enemies that strike me as distinctly different in the mmo space are the Atenists and the Orochi Corporation, both from Secret World. When you arrive in Egypt you find yourself in the middle of a millennia old civil war between the cultish Atenists and the benevolent Marya, with all the history and lore that entails. It’s also worth noting that the video cut scenes showing the squabbles within the Atenist leadership were very good and darkly humorous, like much of the game.

As concerns Orochi, it’s maybe a stretch to call them an enemy, but they definitely aren’t your friend either. Suffice to say there are a lot of subtleties and nuances in your relationship with them. As an aside, I nearly fell out of my chair when the one Orochi officer voiced by none other than Star Trek’s Tim Russ made the ‘red shirt’ comment! lol

In City of Heroes, my award goes to the Freakshow. More than almost any other faction, the Freakshow are a hybrid of terrifying, bizarre, ruthless, and charming.

They’re unhinged anarchists who corrupt what they touch; there’s a story arc that has one undercover police officer going native with their group and essentially destroying his former identity.

But they are also capable of redemption, as evidenced by the small group of them who are running a tech store in Peregrine Island.

Not technically an MMO (although we live in hope) but im going with them anyway… Mass Effects Reapers. Ancient, huge alien machines that view any intelligent organic as little better than a virus that needs to be purged.. its just daunting.

You cannot hate them per se because thier is no malice on thier part, thier logic is flawed but there are no emotions attached to it.

I also like technology as a villain in general because it has the authenticity of being potentially real world plausible…and that makes it somethihng from a fear stance you can relate to whereas the Great demon Schnitzel from Dimension X just to some degree always has that Uh Huh..aspect to it because it is so utterly UN-relatable.
