Final Fantasy XIV will not release Viera and Hrothgar naming rules ahead of Shadowbringers launch

Ow, right in the face...

If you want your Final Fantasy XIV bunny to have a lore-appropriate name, you are going to have to guess. A post on the official site confirmed that Viera and Hrothgar naming conventions will not be available ahead of the launch of Shadowbringers, with plans in place to create the proper time for naming conventions post-launch. Players are naturally outraged and… oh, wait, no, players are being calm and polite and are just happy to see that the conventions haven’t been forgotten.

While you might be guessing at the name for a few days, you’ll also be happy to know that the developers are taking action to address server congestion during the expansion launch, with everything from logout timers for players idling for extended periods to potential server-wide log-off intervals to help ease the server load. That doesn’t mean that there won’t be any issues, of course, but everything possible is being done to address the issues ahead of time.

I’m taking a couple of weeks to a month off from playing. I don’t want to deal with all the congestion issues. That’ll give me a chance to come up with a Viera name when I get back.

Logout timers for ‘afk’ chars was useless at Stormblood launch – ppl just started conversations with an NPC and went to bed, blocking any afk flags and saving the trouble of a possible 90 min queue to login the next day. We will see what additional measures they take to keep queues reasonable this go-round.

I’m a big fan of logout timers when there’s a queue.

/(shudders at the memory of Archeage launch).

Please note that we may also log out all characters on all Worlds should the congestion not dissipate. Should this become necessary, we will make an announcement via the in-game system message before it takes place.

This was what they did last time in response to that. Funnily enough, the 4 to 6 hour queues magically evaporated after that.

I see no reason they can’t force logout after 30 mins afk, even if in an NPC chat. That would fix the problem, too, and ppl can restart such conversations again if they were truly doing a relevant one.

And of course people whined and complained about it.
