Torchlight Frontiers plans pet overhaul in July 16’s Beast Buddies update

It will never stop feeling weird to be reporting on genuine content updates for non-indie-studio MMOs in alpha, but here we are as PWE and Echtra Games have just announced a new update for Torchlight Frontiers. Update 7 is called Beast Buddies and is expected to deploy on July 16th with a pet overhaul.

“Every hero needs a sidekick, and in Torchlight Frontiers it’s your loyal pet companion. They’re your steadfast ally through thick and thin, and have always provided helpful skills like holding your loot, making trips to town, and supporting you in combat. In Torchlight Frontiers, we’ve started with those unique, foundational pet features and added on some new ones. With Update 7, players can now collect pets, swap between them, collect pet skills and assign them to their pet. We’ve also made sure that pets are both a part of a character’s strategy and that players can always choose their favorite pet without sacrificing gameplay power.”

Hate pets? Well, you’re probably in the wrong game. The wrong franchise, even, given how important your pet is in Torchlight in general. But there is more to the update, including the new friends list, new mobs, and a relic system revamp too.

Booyah this is what I’ve been waiting for. I mean I’m used to my Owl and stuff in Frontiers but I really want and need a feline pet (which hasn’t existed up to this point). I’ve been waiting for new pets to arrive. Some of us speculated that changing up your pet type may end up being part of their monetization. They haven’t had fishing in the game yet which was part of changing your pet in the other games and some guessed that may be something that would be sold later on.

So in looking it up I do see that the two new pets don’t include a feline yet *sad face*. It’s a wolf (a second Canidae, congrats Canid lovers) and a dragonling.

Funny that the pet aura icons show multiple feline types in them but no felines are there or coming in the new update, but those icons make me have hope for the future that they will be there. Plus you know, they’d have to be eventually, it would be a really bad move not to have them.

Its good to get word out about features of your unreleased and not-widely-in-public-testing game, but the tone of these updates sometimes sounds like the people writing it don’t realize that almost nobody is even playing it right now -_-

This all sounds great but it will launch with only 3 or 4 classes. That sucks to me and it’s still controlled by PWE.

This game is certainly improving with each update

The one thing that I think is going to hold people back from playing, including myself, is how you basically have to level up your character and items in each different area in the game. So if you play in the first zone, and get gear and levels, as soon as you go to the next thematic area, you are basically back to level 1 and all your gear is basically worthless, requiring you to get gear dropped in THAT zone.

more or less

Its kinda annoying

It’s just like needing flame resist gear in WoW Classic.

It’s weird seeing a game in beta almost treated like live. Update 7? A proper name for the update? That’s shit we see with live games, not games still in testing >.>

I guess it’s just a more fun and punchier way of saying “Hey, this is Beta patch 0.701” or whatever cadence it might be in the grand scheme of things. Also probably makes it more fun for anyone writing news on the game, rather than having to consult the ‘Wheel of Numerics’.

Wheel of Numerics, turn turn turn. Tell us the patch notes for which we should adjourn.

Oh, that’s a… 0.702.A123… Fascinating…
