Black Desert’s latest patch kicks off a new summer event and tweaks guild skills

Black Desert’s having a bit of a good run the past week, what with the launch of the Shai and the announcement of a launch date for its PS4 version, plus the start of preorders for said edition. Nevertheless, Kakao and Pearl Abyss have dropped a small patch today all the same, the heart of which is another new summer event – although technically, it doesn’t start until late tonight, 8 p.m. EDT here on the East coast.

“This week, refresh yourself with a Finto’s juice and get even more rewards with the Start of an Amazing Summer Challenge! As announced recently, we are changing the Horse Flute into the Trainer’s Flute which can be used to call your horses, but also your donkeys, camels and miniature elephants! You will now be able to see which mount you have taken out for each character in the End Game and Character Selection window.”

The Shai release events are still underway as well, and the studios note that they’ve tweaked some guild skills so that guild officers – and in the future, more ranks – can use them. “We will implement more segmented ranks in a future patch,” Kakao says.

I’m not sure why they’re calling it a summer event, when it’s just a log-in rewards event. I’m not complaining! Eagerly waiting for the real summer events.

This is why BDO, despite all I and other say, is a great game. A constant stream of events to change things up.

And just little things like they’ve added NPC amity and combat xp to more quests because “we noticed some players like questing”. Considering I’m one of those and never expected them to change this, it’s a nice touch.

I know that the PVP crowd will have their usual balance complaints, and I have no idea how justified those are, but PVPers are always complaining about balance so w/e

Can you play this game at higher levels without being in to PvP? I’ve been enjoying it so far but starting to wonder how invested I should get if it’s pure PvP.

The original game design was certainly geared towards “you level and then endgame is various flavors of PVP”.

I don’t enjoy PVP generally, and I like it even less in BDO than most games simply because it’s so dependent on gear level which is heavily influenced by spending power, so if your goal is to “win” pvp then the P2W accusations are completely true.

Reason I play is the low impact lifeskills and the escapism of the world itself. The classes are varied and interesting, the world is seamless and beautiful, and while there’s the opportunity for PVP most places there’s very little incentive to do so. A couple times a week I may step on someone’s toes and get killed, but that’s usually just a signal to go away and I do.

YMMV, it has enough of the things I like and only a few that I really don’t

I don’t know if it has changed in the 3 yrs since I played but gear progression to even contend in high level PvE content past Valencia was a journey in itself. Is it possible to play endgame content with any gear under PRI/DUO?

Definitely. I’ve been playing BDO on-and-off since release and I don’t PvP. The land mass is so massive now that it’s not common to come across other people if you get off the beaten path. Most people follow a very narrow view of where to grind and it’s great for players like me who love to explore.

With game knowledge, which is pretty in-depth, you can gear yourself out in decent enough gear to do 90% of the content in about 2-4 months, depending on how much you play. You can participate in all content except the latest expansion of Star’s End, which is aimed at the highest AP levels of players.

Players who haven’t played BDO in the last year or two won’t have current information on how easy it is to gear and get into the game now.
