The Daily Grind: Which online game has a personality that mirrors yours?

19

Intentionally designed or not, every MMO and online game exudes a personality, and no two are exactly alike. It might be the cheerful anarchy of Trove, the crisp aloofness of EVE Online, the future rockstar vibe of WildStar, or the whimsical childishness of Glitch, but personalities are there. And, I think, they matter more than most people realize.

A personality that runs counter to yours or your preference can be grating, even if you like that MMO’s feature set. A personality that mirrors yours might feel like home and give you that extra incentive to settle in and stay a while.

So looking down the list of games that you may or may not have played, which online title would you say has a personality that mirrors yours the best — and why?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Rather than answer the question directly, I would say from recent memory that the poor brutalized force-sensitive creature you encounter in the smuggler storyline on Hoth definitely spoke to my sympathetic/empathetic side.

WoW. The greatest thing that ever existed.

ESO suits me pretty well. It’s mostly soloable, and it’s a flat game, so it doesn’t matter what level I am, I can go anywhere, explore and do quests.
I like it when a “massively multiplayer” game lets me be my true asocial loner self.

Yes, Secret World has the smartest story by far I’ve ever seen in an MMO and speaks to me as well, though I sometimes have to look the other way when it comes to the occult/Satanism overtones. ;-)

Hmm. I’m not sure that one that fits exactly. The closest might be BnS at the moment.

It’s subtly humorous.
Artistic.
Exaggerated.
Sappy (at times)
Action-oriented.
And unexpectedly fun IF you get to know it.

And like Blade and Soul, I need an engine upgrade.

Still waiting for a decent cyberpunk or mecha MMO…

Online game? Maybe Thea? Maybe one of the original Master of Orion games? Something where the activities outside combat, or alternatives thereto, are good while still allowing the occasional bit of brute force…

MMOs? I got nothing. There’s so many that want to break the 4th wall, and when playing I’d much rather not. Add to that the refusal of so many to avoid situations where people are abusive, and the very static situation overall which doesn’t suit me much. Yeah, not sure anything really fits my personality that is out there.

LoTRO, the Shire. A simple life of peace and tranquility threatened by outside forces. (I would like to make a political comment here, but I will restrain myself.)

GW2. Dreamed big when it was young, but squandered it’s potential. xD
