MMOs You’ve Never Heard Of: Decentraland, Monster & Me, and Grand Fantasia

Boring, boring, boring.

Welcome back to another quick roundup of MMOs and MMO-adjacent titles you’ve probably never heard of (or at least have entirely forgotten about!).

Up first: Decentraland, which is new even to me, likely because it’s a cross between Second Life, Minecraft, and all the new crypocurrency-driven games popping up the last year or two. It’s still in development and will eventually function on multiple platforms. (Thanks, Wilhelm!)

“Decentraland is a decentralized virtual reality platform powered by the Ethereum blockchain. Within the Decentraland platform, users will be able to create, experience, and monetize their content and applications. The finite, traversable, 3D virtual space within Decentraland is called LAND, a non-fungible digital asset maintained in an Ethereum smart contract. Land is divided into parcels that are identified by cartesian coordinates (x,y). These parcels are permanently owned by members of the community and are purchased using MANA, Decentraland’s cryptocurrency token. This gives users full control over the environments and applications that they create, which can range from anything like static 3D scenes to more interactive applications or games.”

Then there’s Monster & Me, which popped up on Reddit this week. Apparently, this is a long-gone old-school Chinese MMO with some Pokemon stylings, and it’s been fully revived for English speakers by a private server team. The game’s currently in alpha with wipes planned; there’s an English website with guides and a Discord as well for folks thinking about jumping in.

Finally, we’re featuring Grand Fantasia, which is a Gamigo/Aeria Games title we’ve heard of but seldom covered. It caught our attention this week, however, as it dropped a big patch with new maps and mechanics.

“Together with their sprite companions, players can venture into the colorful game world and collect items for their new pvp-focused equipment. The Awakening System makes it possible to further improve the new equipment. If players collect a complete set, they will receive a unique Red Glow. In the dark parallel world “Alternate Dimension”, players can explore three new maps. Valuable rewards await the heroes brave enough to face the dangerous monsters roaming these mysterious lands.”

Spy other MMOs we’ve never (or seldom) covered? Drop us a tip!
