The Daily Grind: Which MMO offering is filling your summer hours?

50

We’re only now in the middle of July, but so far it feels as though summer 2019 has been a non-stop rollercoaster of great MMO patches, expansions, and events. The Elder Scrolls Online: Elsweyr and Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers both enjoyed strong releases and Harry Potter: Wizards Unite came onto the scene rather abruptly.

Then there are content patches from World of Warcraft, Path of Exile, Lord of the Rings Online, and Black Desert. Plenty of summer and anniversary events, too. Plus, there are betas to be had, such as WoW Classic and Astellia, and that’s been sucking up some gaming time in certain quarters. I’m sure I’m missing a lot here, but you get the drift.

So what’s been captivating you? What has you really excited this summer? Me, I feel like a kid in a candy store with all of the goodies on display. But I’d love to hear about you.

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Technically… Either Warframe, or none at all. I’m sure a lot of people don’t think Warframe counts as an MMO in the first place though, and I mostly play missions in single player mode unless I’m helping someone with something.

I’ve been doing the Summer Event thing in Star Trek Online, but that’s really just logging in for ten minutes to fly around Risa and get my daily handful of bottlecaps towards the “free” ship.

I’ve also been playing Ark, but I’m pretty sure that doesn’t actually count because I play it exclusively in single player mode, and offline. :P But my bulbdog army is steadily growing. Not sure what I’m going to *do* with all of them, but I just can’t bring myself to get rid of the extras when I try to breed them.

I’ve been game-less for a few months now. I’ve either played all of the ones I want to, or the ones I want to now are all on that ugly Steam platform I’ve never bothered to get an account for and don’t want to. Those games are losing my money by not allowing access except through Steam. -shrugs-

I’ve been entertaining myself watching steams on Twitch…They Are Billions looks slightly intriguing to me lately(Though it’s actually an RTS), and regularly watching GTA 5 RP stuff. Seen a few others that appealed to me in a few ways, but nothing worth making the effort on.

None of the games I’ve seen lately intrigue me as much because I spent nearly 4 years on a sandbox, and I want that kind of freedom in games now…and most of the games nowadays are aimed at people playing a sandbox and shooting each-other, rather than teamwork/working together. I simply don’t find fun in going around killing other players, because those are real life people behind that who ‘lost’ something…and there is too much of that type of sadistic behavior going on currently in the nation I reside in and it sickens me.

I would love to find something with a giant tech tree in it, that allows you to explore futuristic things. Something that isn’t just about flying around blowing stuff up. (Especially due to my motion sickness…I really can’t do stuff that has a potential to give vertigo.) Or that allows you to spec into certain skills that help others/support them in some way. I feel that kind of thing has disappeared from games lately…

The current WoW expansion is a waste of time…they can’t all be gems…but that doesn’t mean you get to skip getting flight attuned which will take me 6 weeks of dailies and rep grinding until classic.

I can’t waste time with ala carte and loot box industrial psychology f2p mmorpgs which leaves…2 choices these days?

For my primaries I’ve been alternating between SWTOR and Secret World each month. It’s been working out well as I usually find fatigue starts setting in at about the 3-3.5 week mark. My SWTOR month sub expires in a couple of days after which I’ll be heading back to Secret World, and I’m very much looking forward to that as the next order of business for my Templar will be the beloved Innsmouth Academy. :) Carter unleashed??? lol

City of Heroes is eclipsing any and all other MMORPG’s in my stable. So many alts, so much variety, such a great community, so much fun!

None currently, I’m bored with all of them and find all of them tedious. :/ Been doing a lot of motorcycle road trips and reading a lot of tabletop rpgs.

In terms of MMOs, really nothing which is quite sad. Been playing Insurgency: Sandstorm for my milsim FPS fix, Helldivers/Alien Swarm/Grim Dawn for my top down shooter/ARPG fix, Warframe/Division 2 for my looter shooter fix, a little Rocket League, a little Monster Hunter World, and a decent amount of Tabletop Simulator. It all really depends on what my friends and I want to play, but the Big Four (GW2, FFXIV, ESO, WoW) don’t sit well with my friends and I at all. We’re all just kind of in limbo about what it is we are looking for to keep up wrapped up for at LEAST a month, last major title was Div2 and we’re currently waiting for July 30th to come for the big TU5 Ep1 patch that sounds pretty damn good! Any suggestions for 2-4 players and I’m all ears!
