GTAO takes pretend gambling to the next level with its Diamond casino launch next week

Accidents. Incontinence. Turbulence. Maintenance. Irrelevance. Flatulence. Tumescence. Interpretive dance. GTA Online’s latest update is out next week, and it promises all this and more, literally. The update launches The Diamond – a “luxury casino and resort in the heart of Vinewood” in the crime-ridden Los Santos gameworld.

“You’ve heard the rumors. You want to believe them, and there’s only one way to find out. Abandon your preconceptions. Let go of your inhibitions, your doubts, your sense of proportion, your credit rating. The rumors didn’t begin to do it justice. Welcome to The Diamond. Grand Opening July 23.”

Based on the amusing vignettes, you’re in for a swell time.

“We recruit our housekeepers from the most respected crime scene cleanup teams in the state. There is no bodily fluid or potentially infectious material they can’t remove in the time it takes you to find an alibi.”

But beware: As Kotaku points out, the update has been a bit of a catalyst for scammers to prey on easy marks. Apparently, the scammers wait for these pre-patch environments where people are scared they won’t have enough cash to play, and then they promise viewers in-game money drops in exchange for following them on social media and so forth. Of course, the drops never happen.

I mean, it seems like a good time for someone like me but in the back of my mind I wonder if the fact they sell money, and claim to have “high stakes” poker and other games in game might not literally be a bigger issue with the “gambling and games” debate than even loot boxes. I can see people dropping lots of IRL cash to fake gamble in a virtual casino and that might become a problem.

so a bit about the money drops scam thing. for several months recently ish rockstar was promoting the game through various streamers primarily on facebook by offering money drops for having your fb account linked with your rockstar social and if you logged in during the promoted streams (for like half hour) you had a chance of getting on the streamer’s broadcast and just for doing it you’d be given money drops in game and after a set period of time.

so makes sense that when rockstar switches to twitch for their next promo that well… viewer and subscriber hunger wanna be next big thing twitch streamers take advantage of that belief.

good times.

as for the casino themed update i wonder if they sorted out the legalese to do it or it ever matter to them. i guess we’ll find out potentially as gtao is still one of the more popular online games with a price tag attached (and in general).
