Guild Wars 2 announces legendary upgrades and a community event to unlock ’em

ArenaNet appears to be taking its collaborative community event mechanics to the next level in Guild Wars 2, only this time, instead of boss-rushing for tiers and loot, you’ll be feeding the Mystic Toilet en masse to unlock, well, a sort of minipatch for loot upgrades. Specifically, GW2 is introducing legendary runes and sigils for gear.

“Once socketed, a legendary upgrade has the power to take on the properties of any other upgrade of its type. You can freely socket and remove them from any type of armor without using an Upgrade Extractor. Unlike other legendary items, legendary upgrades have no visual effects. Legendary runes provide the same set bonuses as other runes, and you can combine them with exotic superior runes. For example, if you have a Superior Rune of the Adventurer in your helm, and you add a legendary rune to your boots, setting the legendary rune’s suffix to Adventurer will grant the two-piece bonus for that set.”

Starting next week on July 30th, players will be tasked with donating multiple items and turning in gobs of lucent crystals in exchange for satchels of loot to “force” the Mystic Toilet to poop out the knowledge for these runes. “Every donation progresses a global community goal,” ArenaNet says. “Once the goal is complete, the ability to create new materials for legendary upgrades will become available to every discipline that can craft upgrades.”

Reddit’s reaction is quite mixed, as players debate the proposed UI for the mechanic, the lucent crystal economic outlook, and whether or not the overall playerbase will get much use out of the system.

Hmm.. I can’t seem to find any mention of this in their MMO Manifesto.. I wonder what happened..

I really miss when this game didn’t need all this kind of BS. When GW2 launched it was going to be unique was the promise. As some as they added fractals, it went down ever since. The only way I can play it is just the open-world solo zone content now.

I’ll save myself the hassle and stick with exotics. I only do open world content anyhow.

Agreed
Anything that involves legendaries in GW2 is an annoying pain in the butt and not worth the time. It’s just for those playing that need to have new shinies.

At current prices, the first component of getting one of these runes (keeping in mind that a full set of runes is 6, 7 if you play underwater content) costs around 800 gold each. I am not optimistic about this being the only component and prices can only go up from here as there has not been much call for the items involved.

Frankly, this is out of reach for most players. What’s more, these runes are essentially convenience items. I think that only a very, very small portion of players are even interested in pursing this… yet they want the community at large to ‘fund’ it by throwing their materials into the mystic toilet.

A new grind to help keep people around for the content drought dark age.

Which content drought dark age are you talking about? For starters we’re 2 months in after last living story release which is regular wait time between releases not a content drought but if that wasnt enough this time Arenanet have been releasing content like literally every 2 weeks while we wait! like what people are expecting daily release now else its a content draught?

Reader
TherecDaMage .

I think it’s the fact that we’ve heard almost nothing about LS5 or an new expansion and people have no idea how long we’ll have to wait until either, so they’re expecting a long wait.

Reader

Didn’t they say that 5 would begin directly after 4? I imagine int will be the standard few months afterwards.

yes they did, since the start of season 3 they’ve stuck to the 3 month schedule including when they launched path of fire. They were a couple of times when they went 1 – 2 weeks over the 3 month deadline and when that happened 1-2 weeks before the 3 month deadline they’ve told us they will not manage to hit the 3 month cadence they promised that time. So yeah technically season 5 should launch mid august.

I can accept that maybe people are apprehensive due to the layoffs but its way too premature to declare a content drought in my opinion.

With the lay offs there’s obviously going to be a wait since they’re retooling, something like this happened between HoT and Season 3 when it took them months to get their crap together again.

When hot launched living world cadence was every an episode every 2 weeks, clearly to make that work it was most hands working on living story then we had the 6 month wait to get HoT finalized and the 6 month wait while they restarted living world (they may release an episode every 3 months but they work on 2 at a time, takes 6 months to release an episode) . Retooling had nothing to do with any of that, it was all because the aggressive release cadence didnt allow for proper long term pacing. POF proved the 3 month cadence allowed for the new pacing just fine.

This time around we’re not even talking about an expansion that would involve different teams, we’re talking about a new episode essentially! just cause it has season5 title doesnt really change anything in terms of development. Lets not forget that the living world team doesnt work on one episode at a time so at the time of the layoffs it was already like 50% there while episode 6 was like 75% there (in terms of time not necessarily completion level) . It would be foolish to expect the layoffs didnt have any effect at all ofcourse but doesnt mean they’ll experience months of delays, in fact chances are they’re going all out to make sure they’d be on time simply to alleviate the layoff fears!

Wow, more powercreep on a game that already suffers quite a lot with it. I’m sure it’ll be great for WvW health.

Yes, GW2 has powercreep with the introduction of new stat combos or with new elite class specialisations in every new expac, but legendary upgrades are not!

They only allow to change your choice of already available stats, so it only takes away a $/gold/time sink, even though you have to invest a lot of $/gold/time to get it in the first place!

I thought, you knew what “legendary” means in this game. o.O

Reader
Bruno Brito

Not my point. The point is that Legendaries, while YES, legendary and such, aren’t easy items to get. We already deal with Ascended powercreep while most of the playerbase is using Exotics.

For a game that wants to put everyone in the same power-base, we really could use better balancing BEFORE we put any more powercreep in the way of upgrades for sigils and runes that will of course, screw the game already screwed balance.

Legendaries and Ascended have literally the same stats. The diffence with a legenday is the convenience of swapping stats whenever you’re not in combat, for free. With an ascended, you have to go use the mystic forge to swap stats and it’ll cost you some gold. So, legendaries have nothing to do with powercreep or balace.

The runes have the same stats as exotic runes, you can just swap their type when not in combat.

I’m highly sure that the majority of the playerbase isn’t decked out in Ascended. Nor in Legendaries.

-“All legendary equipment have a level 80 requirement and 5% stronger stats than Exotic quality equipment and equal to Ascended equipment.”

-“Legendary equips will always have stat values equivalent to the the highest tier of equipment available. Currently, they have stats equivalent to Ascended equipment.”

https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Legendary_equipment

For Runes (as well as Sigils), they don’t have a so called “ascended” rarity, but only 3 tiers, the highest called “superior”!

https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Rune

-“5 Legendary equipment will always have the same relative stats as the highest rarity available for the item type.”

“All legendary equipment have a level 80 requirement and 5% stronger stats than Exotic quality equipment and equal to Ascended equipment.”

Added to already powercrept classes and specs.

That changes? Nothing. The game is already a mess balance wise, and it doesn’t need any new tiers of anything. If anything, they should GET RID of tiers, keep all equipment Exotic and use that as a focal point of balance, and the rest is basically QoL and skins, as IT SHOULD BE FOR GW2, A GAME THAT WAS ADVERTISED AS SUCH.

5% on top of 3k power achievable isn’t small.

he was talking about equipment not runes, that 5% increase is when gw2 introduced ascended gear in november 2012

As far as I know unless I missed something Anet didnt say they’re introducing ascended runes or any new tier, legendary runes will have the same exact stats as superior runes/sigil the game had since day 1

This not power creep in terms of total attributes. Legendaries give you no more points than ascended.

Re:wvw I only have 2 characters with mostly ascended items (3 or 4 exotic still). I routinely rotate through my bevy of toons, respeccing with exotics and retrying. It’s not that big of a disadvantage.

You are very much exagerating the impact of these things. Yes, it will make a difference un a dual between skilled players on good builds, but for most purposes it’s not that big of a deal.

Yay, more desirable goodies I know I’ll never get. One day I’ll find/craft a precursor and actually make a legendary…one day…
