Player questions about the Star Citizen Ballista and air defense gameplay are answered

So there’s a new vehicle in Star Citizen. Now while that might elicit rolling eyes and totally original commentary about that news, this new vehicle actually seems to add a new wrinkle to gameplay. It’s the Anvil Ballista, a missile platform capable of taking out air targets from long distance, and it may yet change the battle landscape going forward. With that in mind, players had questions and the devs had answers.

To the point of the Ballista’s short range, which was listed on the original site as 2,000 meters, CIG says it’s more capable of attacks from as far as 10,000 meters away, with fighters being struck from over 9,000 meters out. That range, of course, will vary from target to target based on a ship’s size and heat signature and could even be longer if the target is large and hot enough.

For now, the Ballista isn’t capable of “blind fire” over hills and into things that are not in line of sight. However, plans are being made to have out-of-sight targeting systems via a forward operator control or by target data shared between ships.

As for what the Ballista means for ground and air combat, that’s a point the devs say will be elaborated upon in full later. There are other answers to read, however, such as what ships can haul a Ballista in to action and how the rover will be restocked with arms now and in the future. You can get the full rundown at the game’s website..
