Gamigo is up to something next week – is it related to ArcheAge?

Gamigo’s dropping something new next week, according to a tweet the company just sent out. MMO players will recall that Gamigo’s the German company that bought up Trion’s assets last year and currently maintains ArcheAge, RIFT, Trove, and the Defiance franchise.

The tweet says “something’s brewing” and leads to a website – under the old Trion domain, press F, etc. – that promises a big reveal six days from now, conveniently in time for Gamescom.

The quotes showing up on the teaser page are all over the map – and timeline – with some being recent and some as old as five years. One references “labor points,” while others talk about farming, pay-to-win, housing, sandboxes, and pirate armadas – which all seem to suggest to us that it’s something to do with ArcheAge.

It’d certainly be interesting if Gamigo were moving on ArcheAge, given that it was once one of the bigger and more creative MMORPGs in its heyday. Last January, Gamigo said that it had “reached an agreement” as to the development of the game with XL Games and increased the size of the ArcheAge team, though we haven’t seen much to justify that this year beyond Hiram updates – at least not yet. At the time, the company’s Mervin Lee Kwai, one of the key Trion folks to survive the layoffs, also suggested an aggressive monetization do-over was in order. “We’ll do that by evaluating our business models and phasing out some of the older, aggressive micro-transactions along with reducing the reliance on lockboxes,” he said. “Instead, we’ll focus on selling the service and optional objective rewards through modern, hybridized models.”

Update
ArcheAge is looking even more likely; the game’s official Twitter calls it a “secret project.”

Very interesting. Although ArcheAge relaunches always kill the experience before it starts for me. But they may have been a Trion thing. If they can get past the nonsense the MMO is fantastic.

If it’s a sub server with labor, p2w and cash shop removed then every other MMORPG should be worried right now.

It’s pretty universally agreed that archeage was the best MMO ever killed by p2w.

Because AA relaunches always go super well.

Archeage was an amazing MMO in so many ways. Had the monetization been much less aggressive, I feel AA would go down as one of the best and still be thriving. I absolutely loved the game. But I’ll never go back.

What a waste.

I have to ask: Where do you guys see Archeage monetization being “less aggressive”? The game LAUNCHED with the labor system, it was a core mechanic. It was clearly made to be a nickled and dimed MMO.

Yeah, it had really interesting stuff, but while i’m happy to blame Trion for the death of our godless universe, i really can’t blame them for being the proponent of Archeage’s downfall. They did indeed made it worse, but the game had several core systems made for P2W.

I hardly believe that downgrading and regrading were stuff that Trion created.

I just want to point out that the labour system on its own is not necessarily a problem. Both BDO and TERA have similar systems, and those did not bother me. The problem was that Archeage, unlike those other two did not give you offline regeneration of it unless you were a subscriber.

I find the labor system a huge issue. You shouldn’t EVER get a lockout on in-game activities because of you not swiping.

There are better ways to balance resource acquiring and shoving into the economy.

Well… it seems clear to me.
Haven’t you heard about Wow Classic?
Now they will launch Archeage Origins. You pay 150 dollars and you will be able to play the game till they break it.

LOL I fear you may be correct but the only catch is… ArcheAge didn’t really add much in the way of content since launch… most of what they add is new gear… get new gear, grind to as high as you can go until they release newer, better gear and you start over…rinse/repeat. Heck, they still regurgitate the same old costumes in the cash shop… not a lot of development money/effort goes into this MMO. Their motto has to be: minimum effort for maximum profits, and they live by it ~ LOL

Unless they add some twist to it, I cannot see it going over well. People have spent a lot of real money and a boatload of in game coin to level their gear. Why would you want to start that over?

A sub only model without a cash shop would be the only way to save this game.

The only thing they could do to surprise anyone is to make PVP optional. Other than that nothing can help what’s left of this game.

Pvp is already optional, just stay on your potato farm. Nothing wrong with that.

LOL nice try. AA was and always will be a gank box once you hit level 30.

AA is a gankbox past lvl 30. That’s undisputed.

They can brew free beer for all i care. Trion destroyed any good will they had long ago.

Now, we are in the “actions speak louder than words” zone, and i don’t think Gamigo got that memo yet.

So… I came back to the game very late last year after swearing I’d never return more than 3 years ago. It was just before Trion sold to Gamigo. From the changes Gamigo have made to monetization so far, I am not completely convinced this is a “good” announcement although the innocent in me still has hope LOL

Seems to me they are getting rid of the ability to make decent gold in game via crafting (at least killing off what Trion didn’t). Except… for wood, ore and fabric (and that is always subject to change via another update). If you haven’t played in years and loved the crafting aspect of the game and decide to come back, be ready for a nasty shock.

It appears they are trying to push people into running packs more and visiting the cash shop. There is a good portion of AA that I don’t participate in… mainly PVE and RvR because the requirement for gear score is so high now. When I first came back I thought I could finally have fun with that aspect of the game due to Hiram gear but they have raised the bar on that twice just since I restarted… I’ve given up. I just “play house” and farm mostly but I am missing the rest and have been looking for another game to fill the void until Camelot Unchained comes out.

Not all the changes were bad, they have made some good moves too. I don’t have a problem with games trying to make a living. I just have a problem with them trying to make ALL of their living off of ME. As for those who mentioned a subscription model… I wish! That’s the way this game should have went when released. The game already has a monthly sub you pretty much have to buy unless you don’t want to own land and if you don’t own land… you really limit yourself in game.

I would love to see an alpha/beta version of this game released with a real good old fashioned monthly sub, with expanded PvE with decent gear drops. Offer tons of pets, mounts, outfits, etc etc in the cash shop… fine with me (as long as they are decently priced) but nothing that would be considered PTW. One can dream….

No mounts in the cash shop. When it launched I had the biggest bear farm on my server. When they put bear mounts in the shop, I quit and never looked back.

I can’t blame you for being salty about it one bit. They have pulled similar moves to a lot of things in the game. Is one of the things I was alluding to in my post above.

Never, have I been so angry with an online game before as I was when I left years ago. The only reason I came back was I’m desperate for a decent game (that has most of what I look for in a game) and missed parts of AA and heard it was having a resurgence (which it is… new/old peeps returning every day).

I was shocked at how badly they borked crafting (on purpose). It’s a very sad shadow of what it had been before the official release. I have been thinking about liquidated my assets and quitting for the past couple of weeks… the only thing really stopping me is what game is next? Everything hot right now has no appeal to me.
