Overwatch’s latest patch adds Sigma and a (briefly bugged) role queue

fa la la la la la ~

Another Overwatch patch has arrived, bringing with it a brand-new hero for players to fling at enemy teams. Or, perhaps more accurately, fling things back at enemy teams, since Sigma’s whole thing is controlling gravity and reflecting stuff because seriously, what would you do with gravity powers? Levitate and make things bounce around, right? That’s what we thought, and that’s what he does. And what you can do vicariously by playing him, too!

The patch has also introduced the role queue system, which alters how players queue up for matches; rather than queueing and then selecting a role, players choose a role and then get matched for a party, able to select any hero within the role you queued for. The feature was apparently causing some notable bugs with Quick Play but should be fixed now, as the queue isn’t meant to work in that mode for right now. Other than that, things seem to be going well, at least if you like not being on a team consisting of four Hanzos all arguing that the other three players need to change.

Wait, I thought Disney bought Fox. How did Activision get the rights to Magneto?

Its not completely clear for quick play as it currently stands. In this patch they made changes to a number of heroes with the expectation that you will have 222 team set up.

However as they screwed up that for quick play so they reverted it is back to pick anything but the changes to heroes are still in place. This means some folks who play particular heroes will have a harder time for a little while, at least until Sept 1st.

Hopefully by then they will have sorted things out and put in a proper role queue for quick play too

You already couldn’t have 4 Hanzo’s on a team already unless you are playing no limits in arcade. It was previously locked to one of each character per team, as it is currently until the end of the Role Queue Beta in September.

I played Competitive last night for the first time in probably a year in order to try out the role queue, and let me tell you, it made a world of difference. The only real complaint I have is that since Reaper was buffed to counter GOATS comp, he’s particularly powerful now when there are always two tanks on the field. I suspect a Reaper DPS will quickly become a must-have.

I didn’t try competitive but did try the busted quick play version briefly while it was still up and it does change how you have to approach a game. Its going to be interesting to see if the casual quick play folks will take to it when it gets properly enforced.

But here is the problem… and why I’m opposed to it in Quick Play.
I don’t give a lick about comp. I just jump in to have fun and shoot things. And no one is going to want me playing Sombra on a forced 2/2/2

They’re putting the original QP into the Arcade for people who don’t want the role locks.

Yup as DeadlyAccurate says they are putting classic quick play as a permanent option in the arcade mode once they lock in the 2/2/2 role queue option. Its supposedly all going to be in place by September 1st so lets hope they can sort things out by then.

I must admit that I was a bit sceptical about this when it was announced. However, after my brief exposure to it yesterday even though it was broken I am quite looking forward to giving it a spin when its properly in place.

It won’t be for everyone as it will make you play in a particular way but it is something that will shake things up and make players have to learn again and that is always fun to me.
