Hegemony is a new ‘classic’ MMORPG built using Minecraft

If you’re still a bit bummed over Mojang canceling Minecraft’s Super Duper Graphics Pack overhaul, then I do have a little bit of good news for you: An indie dev team is working on an MMORPG built on top of the classic voxel sandbox. It’s called Hegemony, and according to the lead dev (whose day job is working for Path of Exile’s Grinding Gear Games), it began as a small build project for Minecraft but over the course of four years of development has scaled up into a full-fledged MMO in its own right, with “at least 1500 hours of content” planned for release, a huge map, conquerable territory, and constant updates.

Hegemony is a classic-styled MMORPG set in a parallel world to 14th – 17th century Europe. Hegemony has a heavy focus on shifting away from current MMORPG trends and returning to the game design principles that made MMORPGs in our childhoods such memorable experiences,” the studio says.

“Hegemony has a contiguous world where players can feel that they are truly a part of. We eschew the theme-park model of world and level design; there are no clear distinctions of an area being end-game or early-game. Locations and their respective content are strongly integrated, resulting in lower and higher level players constantly mingling. […] In Hegemony, the player is not the hero but instead an opportunistic nobody trying to make it in the world. Quests will require players to take advantage of the situation, manipulate, read between the lines and sometimes solve puzzles/riddles in order to advance.”

The game is expected to be free-to-play without pay-to-win mechanics. Check it out on its official site!

Close, the world parallels 14th – 17th century Europe and the current areas that have been made are based on Austria.

There will be PvP but not open PvP, if you are in a PvP situation there is no chance that you wondered into it by accident, you intentionally chose to PvP.

While we do have PvP in endgame, it is not THE endgame, just a part of endgame where we eventually want to enable guilds being able to fight over control of ingame towns.

This is how I’ve always wanted a sandbox MMO to do PvP. Fighting other players for control of towns is fun, getting ganked when I just want to do my own thing, not so much. Can’t wait to check it out!

I could never get over Minecraft’s blocky graphics..

I like the idea. I’d be down…IF it’s not open PVP. Have to wonder if they mean unmodified Java client, or Windows 10/ pocket edition. I’ve been playing Minecraft on my phone lately, with a controller, it’d be cool if I could play it on that.

Nope not open PvP, and yes unmodified Java client for now, but all our backend infrastructure is tailored to scalability so porting to other platforms in the future is a possibility.

That seems like a fun time, I’ll have to check it out. The big question is of course whether there’s open PvP, which I couldn’t find an answer to on the site.

I did like this snippet though:

Hegemony is designed to be played at your own pace; no player would be severely disadvantaged due to the progress of another. Mechanics are designed in such a way that you do not need to treat gaming like a second full-time job.

A sandbox game where you aren’t at the mercy of the person who can play 12+ hours a day!?

Nope not open PvP, if you are in a PvP situation there is no way you got their accidentally, you’d have to made an intentional decision to put yourself in that position.
