Blizzard’s new WoW Classic video takes you – and the devs – back 15 years

'Did you guys - did you guys get the sheep? What are you doing?' is all of us right now

Very mature.

WoW Classic hype is only climbing as we push onward to next week’s launch, and more servers – Mankrik, most recently – are filling up. So why not mark some time with a feel-good fluff video? That’s Blizzard’s plan, anyway.

“Watch some of the original World of Warcraft developers play WoW Classic together and share behind-the-scenes stories about the game that started a 15-year journey across Azeroth and beyond,” the studio suggests. We spy Aaron Keller, Alex Afrasiabi, Jeff Kaplan, Pat Nagle, and Tom Chilton, as they reminisce over the quests they implemented, the art they tweaked, and the features they juggled. Guys, they even read the quest text and beg for heals and complain about broken sheep… and talk about the joy of “going home.” Enjoy!

You know it’s really strange that they’re actually putting out videos like this. Especially when you see the (some former, some current) WoW devs talking about how the game was made out of a passion for wanting an MMO they can all play, etc.

Because current WoW has lost that passion so badly and most of Blizzards’ games don’t feel like they have that passion behind them anymore as well. Obviously businesses exist to make money and that’s always been the case, but it at least helps when the devs are passionate and appear to care about delivering great experiences. FFXIV is a good example with this where Naoki Yoshida’s the face of the game’s dev team. Dude has a passion for MMOs and most of the other big names around him like Soken also exude that.

Maybe this and WC3 Reforged will help Blizzard rediscover their passion for what made them great in the first place, but I doubt that. AAA game studios just aren’t the same that they used to be.

Yes i’m excited af again, been trying to not get overly hyped but…

Retail is my issue atm, i’m so into it, classic was the only reason i resubbed, never thought i’d get hooked on retail wow again?

Setting my goal again to ding 60 which i never did back then (eventually no rush), i’m unsure how much i’ll play it as i really like to focus and devote to one mmorpg, a one mmorpg kinda guy i guess.

All in all it’s one hell of an option to have along side retail.

I quit some time ago because of the current retail. I don’t like what they’ve done to the game I once loved.

I’ve been lurking on private servers for some time now. It’ll be great to have an official server again.
I can’t wait to leave the private server scene.

Retail to me is no longer a game I like. I don’t like the absence of talent trees. The current system feels little too easy and simple. It’s too much like a MOBA which I hate.

I plan to devote to classic. If not I’ll quit again as I had before because I don’t like the current retail.

It is great that it’s there for those that do like it; however, it’s also great that classic is now here for those of us that preferred what WoW once was as an MMORPG.

I remember these days but not fondly. EQ was my first MMO so WoW always felt like you had the training wheels on after that game. I would definitely agree with some of the stuff posted here; current WoW you have so many ’empty’ levels where you get no skills, no talent points, no new armor or weapon skills to train, the combat was harder in classic but it was still easy after EQ, and the trade skills certainly felt more impactful than now.

But it never clicked for me even if I have played on and off since beta. It just has so many problems that the only time I really enjoyed it was Wrath when a bunch of us played together. I get some of the wish to go back to something, we have CoX in a playable state again after all, and retail is certainly lacking. I’m curious to see how this all pans out over time.

It’s exactly how i felt about wow at launch (training wheels) i actually described it as a Fisher Price mmo.

Coming from expansive, complex, feature packed, option heavy, broad housing, deep crafting, that’s exactly how it felt, as if it had training wheels, comparatively the leveling was so fast as well, like shake your head in disbelief fast.

Fast Forward to today and i admit classic feels so slow to me now, lmao.

When you are playing games such as EQ2, SWG and EQ for you, it wasn’t about leveling it was about doing stuff with other players, making friends, and tackling whatever your hearts desire (meaning it wasn’t all about combat, there was a plethora of other activities people could participate in).

Leveling was just this thing happening in the background. I remember being like level 22 for weeks, and it didn’t bother you at all because it wasn’t all about leveling as fast as the speed of light, could you imagine that today?

I mean overall i’m grateful, flat out lucky really, to have been there, met the rights peeps and experienced what it was like to be transported to another world.

If wow was your first mmo kinda sucks tbh, as they will never know or experience the pleasure of what it was like to play an authentic mmorpg.

Sigh…. I wasnt planning on playing this, but that video reminded me of what it felt like rolling my first undead rogue.

There are so, so many different different games to play now. I don’t have enough time.
