Star Trek Online is moving its event rewards away from reputation projects and into a new mode

surfing something.

The seasonal events of Star Trek Online have long lived within the game’s Reputation system alongside the projects of those mechanics, but not any longer. A new post on the official site reveals that within a short span of time, players will be tracking event progress by a new tab in the Mission Journal, thus changing and rearranging the way that seasonal event progress works to be more intuitive and straightforward for players across the board.

Instead of working like projects which require steady progress on a daily basis, the new interface will functionally work exactly like gaining experience, with progress being accumulated and more forgiving of anyone who misses some time but still wants the rewards. Progress is also account-wide for players who fly multiple different captains, further streamlining the process. The ultimate goal was to bring in more of the fun, freewheeling sense of seasonal events that the Reputation system wasn’t as good at facilitating; players will get an opportunity to test how well the change works in the very near future.

Well, sounds like a good change, though the main event unlock has been account wide for years anyways.

I misread the headline though and thought it said they were moving away from reputation systems altogether! Now *that* would be a welcome change. What an insane grindfest that is, and they keep adding more…

Sounds like it could be a positive change!

My one question on it so far is where it will leave people who started event rep projects in the past with the intention of finishing them in a future event. (An event from past years could still be completed with the equivalent ticket from the current year’s event.)

If I understand well it will be like an exp bar that will continue to fill with the activities of the new event – like now but a bit less complicated if you dont need to add commendations

Which is great for the new event. I just wonder what will happen with older event reputation projects that are still active. Will they still be there? Will we be able to pick which one we want the experience to go into? That kind of thing.

Progress is also account-wide

Praise the gaming lords!

As the game ages, finding ways to make game systems easier to comprehend (using XP methodology) and easier to use (by account instead of by character) is a good way to retain customers.

The fact that the game didn’t do this originally bears investigation. At the core, it was a game design mistake. However, game design reports to management. Maybe management had insufficient experience back then to guide the designers toward the easier system now adopted? Perhaps management mistakenly equated the play-every-day mechanisms of short-session mobile games with long-session-play in an MMORPG? Community management and/or QA plays a role too, since they should have the hands-on experience to forsee the problems, and lobby both design and management for better systems.

Hopefully this will be the first of many improvements in the game.

Account wide is certainly a plus, but I’ve been stung so many times by Craptic I can’t help but wonder what the catch is :(

I’m eager for this change, juggling 10 alts is a pain with regards to daily grinding >.<
