World of Warcraft: Classic adds four new realms while retail tests is anniversary Alterac Valley incarnation

You've seen my dog.

The World of Warcraft: Classic hype train rolls on as the game continues to dominate streams on Twitch and also appears to be depopulating the auction house on the live game as well. (Speculation on that one includes the idea that goldsellers are just moving markets, so to speak.) It’s expansive enough that four new realms have been added to the game, two Pacific and two Eastern, one PvP realm and one PvE realm per region. Will that solve crowding problems? We’ll see! It is a mystery.

Meanwhile, the game’s retail version has concluded another test of the anniversary event Alterac Valley incarnation, a classic version of the battleground meant to be available for all levels that will sync players to 60 no matter what. Underleveled players will get experience for killing monsters, completing objectives, and clearing quests, so it will hopefully be fun to use as both a way to level and for high-end gameplay.

Nice to hear players are having fun even with all the wait times and crowded servers.

Haven’t had much luck with getting into the game except right at launch on Monday. I’ve just got about 1-2 hours after work and that is spent in the queue, lol.

Still greatly enjoying the event, even if it’s more via twitch than actual play time.

We don’t know the true Retail subscription figures but let’s assume that at least 50% of them, if not 75% or more, would try to play Classic since “free to play with current subscription”.

Say Retail has 5M subs at 50%: 2.5M
75%: 3.75M

Add another 1M for returning Subs (a chunk started 2 weeks ago to reserve 3 names on realms they can’t log into btw) and we get between 3.5M and 4.75M people trying to enter Classic.

40 servers worldwide: approx 100K subs per server .
=> Guaranteed #FAIL
GRRRRRR…..

So far, the live WoW Classic is everything the “Hype” has promised. Knowing that my characters won’t be wiped after some weeks have passed has only made it better.

Aside from a few people not behaving themselves (quickly put on ignore by almost everybody), the community has been helpful, respectful, quick to group up, and generally a real pleasure.

I am finding it interesting that there is a real game to play again. Even the trip from Lvl 1 to Lvl 20 is filled with strategic and tactical choices to be made in Talents, Professions, Classes, Alts, etc. And these choices actually matter.

WoW Classic has certainly been worth the wait, and does not disappoint.

I didn’t want to get my hopes up, or get over hyped, went in cautiously hopeful, and now? i’m beside myself, i could have never dreamed or even imagined it would or could be this good.

It’s just what we’ve had for the last 15 years, comparatively, this is deep af.

The slow pace, reading and savoring every quest, exploring as you’re not pointed where to go, so yea EXPLORING!! and they are good quests too, i love getting into their little worlds, no racing, no rushing, f me you even have to watch your purse strings/wallet ffs, geee… i dunno 10 copper man that’s a lot brah, do i really need that spell yet, oh yea thinking about chit too :)

Reader
Matthew Yetter

Same here. There are some really hard choices to make, deciding on professions, which spells to buy, which to upgrade, etc. Funds are tight and it will take effort to afford my mount at level 40, to say nothing of 60. I also quickly ran into a bag space problem, having to decide what to throw out in order to make room for other stuff. Then having to decide whether to buy another bag or pay for a skill.

Such a difference from retail, where everything is simply handed to you.

Very much enjoying myself so far. Played in Vanilla and while I do think there are aspects of the Retail version that are better, over all the tone, mechanics and play style appeal to me more in Vanilla. I miss transmog and bag space the most so far.

Reader
Ironwu

There was an interesting cast related to transmog that put forward that it was really not that good as it removed the sense of pride and accomplishment that resulted from showing the gear one has gotten.

For sure, I am not fond of the clown outfit look that the color schemes produce. Or warriors wearing shorts. But rather than transmog in Classic, I would like the ability to Dye. That would be great. :)

Ahh, bag space. What can I say but that no matter how much we have, we always need more. :)

You know, that’s an idea that I could definitely get behind. Just being able to dye gear to better match would go a long way for me being able to not care that we don’t have transmog. :)

I was preaching that chit over decade ago, it used to be look at this sword, mount, something you f’ing EARNED!!!!!!!! and If you want it you can have it too, roll up the sleeves and go WORK for it!

To: how much that $cost$ on the store? What a f’ing joke suits turned this hobby into.

Transmog, and mounts, when i sell stuff i’m checking to make sure it doesn’t read you haven’t acquired this appearance yet, lol,

After every kill i’m hitting my mount button ready to race a few feet away to kill the next mob i find.

I’m trying to auto sort my inventory…

and that’s all from playing the last couple months, think about that well under 2 months i did wow, 15 f’ing years worth HUH?, that’s problem.

Here though, classic, one thing’s for sure, it’s be f load longer than two months. That’s guaranteed.

Already done. :) I tend to play a trio of characters in mmorpgs. In Vanilla it was a mage Tailor/enchanter, a hunter skinner/leatherworker and a paladin BS/miner.

This time around it’s a warlock tailor/enchanter, a druid herbalist/alchemist (which I swapped to at the start of BC as a main) and a paladin engineer/miner.

:)

“Make sure your roll a Tailor” see that is a super solid decision, i totally 100% agree i could not subscribe to that advice enough

BUT!!! lmao :) haha you knew that was coming, you don’t really have too make sure here.

For me the key is to play with what you got, the tools given to you and one of them is your brain.

No addons, no turning to the internet for help, read the quest if you’re having trouble the hints are as plain as day, so not saying they are cryptic, you just need to read, look at your map and OK got IT!!! what a feeling, ahhh, coool! Some are even in game, they talk about whatever in the quest and as you’re out exploring you go ahhh, that’s the camp i bet he’s talking about, and yep, it’s amazing.

The best thing about the WoW classic launch is that we’ll never have to hear about WoW classic again after a month

Reader

But.. you will? The endgame will release in phases, playercount may sustain enough for things like progression races or ‘Classic+’, and Blizzard is looking at some form of moving forward to BC and Wrath.

1) I never countered your opinion with my own; I merely asked you what you were basing your opinion on, a question you didn’t answer clearly.

2) We’re still hearing about Classic WoW.

3) That you would return to the forgotten comments section of a forgotten article just to gloat betrays a laughable amount of pettiness.

Reader
Ironwu

Take a glance to your right and look at the “Popular Threads” column. Time for some coffee?

Reader
Utakata

A couple things to note when using that as an indicator.

1) 100 plus comments are nothing when I’ve seen articles here hit 500 plus which had nothing to do with WoW Classic.

2) Sure WoW Classic might be all the rage currently, but not everyone is posting rosy things about it, lol.

Reader
Ironwu

WoW Classic has ALL the “Popular Threads” entries, so it is “nothing”?

Some people (who are not even playing, I bet) are posting anti-Classic comments, so “lol”?

“…all the rage currently…”? Heard that same sort of stuff back in 2004/2005.

Sounds like you are in denial. WoW Classic launched big, and is still getting bigger. Come and play it a while, see what you find.

Strawman. I never claimed it to be “nothing”. Just indicating you are putting way too much stake into it. And that’s not denial. That’s stating a reasonable position. So let’s start taking the “woo” out of Ironwu please. At least to save you and your hi-fiving /upvoters from any potential disappointment in the future.

I also strongly doubt this is 2004/2005 though, “lol”.

Sry for speaking for you Ironwu, i’m not.

He was just smarter all along, Rick Mills too, these guys saw the writing on the wall where i was all tip toeing into this, so cautions to not let myself down, and now look at me after 2 nights, haha, i actually got pink pigtails :)

Reader
Utakata

If you want to know my actual position on this, I am actually cautiously optimistic that this might do better than reasonably expected. But the thing is I have no real or tangible evidence to back that up. Hence, the caution in my optimism.

That said, Mr. Iron has yet to demonstrate any caution in his rosy speculation. And thus posting claims that only serve to boost what fans of this really want to hear. Even if he is absolutely right in the end, this is really a terrible way of gauging outcome.

When i see something i know right away, as in immediately if it’s right or not (if that makes sense), and never been wrong, it’s like i was born that way.

Sure i’m known to get excited and enthusiastic about many games, SWL… but this feeling is totally different than enthusiasm.

I’ve been in the beta’s still remained calm, and yea nothing, and continued on with the i really don’t know how this will take, and tbh it took last night and even today to full sink in, i’m in love again and maybe, even possibly home, and that comes from years of being f’ed over, and over, and over again, and even when you think you’re safe SWL, they still f you over some more.

The feeling in game and being part of the world, it’s the feeling i had when i fell head over heals in love with EQ2, exact same.

It’s not a cash shop mmo, credit card driven mmo,

It’s an MMO + RPG, it’s an actual MMORPG not an mmo that forgot all about the RPG

Before mmorpg’s my game preference were FPS, and my biggest love was super deep single player first person rpg’s. Morrowind anyone?

It’s no surprise i fell to piece’s when i played EQ2 for the first time, wow is EQ2, sure not as deep, but after what we’ve got after the last 15 years, it’s deep af comparatively, and hopefully not speaking too soon in that i might actually say better than EQ2 in certain ways as wow really nailed the world part, and that has just clicked in over the last couple nights.

It’s an mmo +rpg and that is rare mofo find in this day and age.

I just know when i truly like something, and yea i tend to go all in :) lol

Because the past belongs in the past, learn to move on

Either way, if it does somehow stick around after the ghost town phase I sure hope classic will get its own columns/forums/whatever, because me and the rest of the world are seriously sick of hearing about it (yes, classic community is still a minority, a very annoying vocal minority but a minority nonetheless), here, you have it now, leave us the f alone.

Reader
Ironwu

WoW Classic community is a “…minority…” when compared to what other MMO community?

Sometimes what we have in the present is actually not as good as what we had in the past.

So, perhaps we can “…move on” to something that is actually better, even if it is not today’s substandard offering?

I’ve no doubt they will be adding OG type content to Classic, wow retail is f’ing dead, there is just so many happy players it’s the most incredible mmorpg launch of all time.

It’s something which cannot be explained, like roller coaster i guess, someone can explain it but until you’ve done it there will be no understanding., it’s not the same from the sideline.

No worries and I had my WoWstock like moment already but it was with spandex and capes instead in another old mmo.

I think if I went into WoW Classic I would feel a bit like I seem to remember you did with my game of choice. You want to like it and for it to click but it never quite manages to get there.

While It’s cool people are enjoying this, I find the idea that the community in this is so good very bizarre. The number one reason I disliked WoW back when it launched was the terrible community. Having a flagged skull con human paladin (with their name in all caps, solid sign there) hop up and down on my fishing bobber (so if I misclicked I’d have attacked him), the valley of trials- the barrens- and other areas under constant attack, having the auction house NPCs killed by stealthed rogues over and over, it was just dreadful. There are other issues with it too, but the community was always my biggest problem, it was so much better in EQ and CoX. Not perfect of course, but vastly more enjoyable to experience.

xpsync
Reader
xpsync

Exactly why i went screaming back to EQ2.

What it is this time, i feel, no children playing, not in meaning but literally as in age, like little kids.

Little kids are far from interested in wow this time, wow was plagued by them before. People are even lining up taking turns to complete quests?????? WTF This is not happening, i must be dreaming, i mean i can’t say when that has ever happened lol. You just want to give me bags for free, huh? what’s the catch? ok yea i’m totally dreaming.

Reader
Ironwu

EQ2 is good as well. I am still running my sub (1yr). I like LotRO as well, but am currently not playing. If CoH/CoV ever goes legit, will probably dabble there as well. :)

But WoW Classic probably has me for at least a couple of years. Maybe longer if they launch some BC/WotLK servers and allow character copy to them.

xpsync

Always been a one mmorpg type kinda guy with a back up, in case of server downtime, although that itself has changed much over the years, as in not as necessary as servers are rarely offline like the earlier days.

So still have swg, and retail too i suppose, retail wow was more in line with my first love EQ2

but this “Classic” this is home run.

Savoir every second, take my sweet ass time in every facet, enjoy the dev love pouring out of every pixel, only a real deal OG officially sanctioned EQ2 “CLASSIC” server could pull from this place.
