Here’s roughly ten minutes of Chronicles of Elyria pre-alpha gameplay

28

A common complaint among those who are watching the development of Chronicles of Elyria from the sidelines is that there’s not much actual game being shown off, with only claiming non-existent lands or secession from unbuilt kingdoms to show for it. Well, now we’ve got the bones of a sandbox MMORPG to show off with some new internal playtest footage.

The footage in question is captured from this past Thursday of a “prelyria” build, which is effectively a pre-alpha version of the game. The video takes us through some character creation and then to the game’s world, where the player avatar strides around a dark forest, fiddles with their inventory, and swings a sword at a poor NPC. According to the video description, this sort of internal playtesting happens twice a week.

One should bear in mind that the footage in question is clearly very early, so expect lots of jankiness such as massive framerate drops, simplistic graphics, and extremely rough combat. As a proof of concept, though, the footage is certainly meritorious in that we get to see all of the little pieces working together. Judge for yourself below.

I love today’s gamers.

Show them pre-alpha footage and they dismiss the game, and decry the state of development.

Don’t show them anything and ‘OMG the dev isn’t being transparent! It’s a scam obs because they haven’t shown a thing!

You shouldn’t read gaming forums if you can’t do a little objective thinking and research on your own. How about actually follow a game, watch their streams, stay up on news?

OR wait until the game hits the shelves and stay off forums because easily 75% of you have no idea wth you are talking about.

They’ve shown videos that look a lot better than that before. Here’s one that’s almost two years old and looks much better: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_ZG22ckzB0
And a bunch more: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCa7jRzCTpW2NCh4FK11y9jQ/videos

Why? That’s just footage not game play. They arnt to that point to have real gameplay footage so they atm testing in low poly count

That is tragic.

what do they hope to achieve by showing this?

make people think, “hey, non major studios cant make good mmorpgs”?

mission accomplished.

Sorry, but very early build graphics does not cut it. This looks terrible and with such low graphics it should run a little smoother.

Reader
PupTwilight Patterson

Erm….. Low graphics doesn’t when the coding not finished. If you think smooth gameplay means lower graphics lol

Wow, it looks so UGLY!!

What is the deal with DEVs these days? There used to be a time when we would wonder with each passing year at how beautyful games would be, how realistic the environments or expressive the faces and so on, but now, it’s like they are getting worse and worse????

wtf??

This is a very low-poly pre-build. The entire graphical setup is basically for nothing but mechanics testing. It’s meant to be ugly and low effort.

Very few games have great graphics in such super-early builds.

life is feudal, new world (just to name 2)

it will look better once they improve the graphics but you can tell it won’t ever look better or much better than wow did 13 years ago.

There was a time when from one year to the other, the quality of graphics improved in astonishing ways. People would buy entire PCs simply to run these games as they came out…

It’s not just chronicles of elyria, there are tons of other games (including single player ones) where the level of quality of graphics can only be described as disappointing.

Long gone are the days where devs would put an effort and pay attention to this subject ambitiously, like they did in The Witcher 3, and that game came out 4 years ago!!!!!!

A game may get initial buzz on its graphics, but that won’t last long if the systems behind it are clunky. Players have become much more sophisticated in what they want out of combat, crafting and building in games. If a developer has limited resources, it may be a matter of systems over eye candy. If a game has compelling combat and what not, players will forgive graphics. But if a game has bad combat and what not, its graphics are not going to save it.

I think you’re partly right, for part of the player population.

But there’s another part of the player population, that I am part of, that, even though it may sound stupid, will refuse to play a game if doesn’t look good, or good enough.

I say it’s stupid because it’s silly to judge a game only on graphics, and there are 91 million people loving minecraft right now, I’m not disputing that.

But not me, I could never play minecraft. In fact, this is blocking me from playing older games that I would have loved if I had played them at the time.

I know there’s lots of people like me, and even if it is silly, specially with regards to (mmo)RPGs, I can’t help it, I simply won’t play what I consider to be an ugly game, no matter how good it is in other regards.

Huh? You know this is not going to be the final graphic build right? You do know most games are designed and made in a low poly count world then they add in the higher poly counts and graphics and animations lol

Reader
PupTwilight Patterson

Lol this post clearly shows you haven’t been following. This is meant to show off game play in the low poly count world since they haven’t added the graphics they are shooting for

Doesn’t matter.

Wouldn’t matter if they did it on purpose; if something looks ugly, it looks ugly.

So an internal test build must have the new modern graphics… regardless of whether anything is translating at all?

People demanded to see something, so they showed something. If you aren’t interested in extremely early pre-alpha builds then it doesn’t really apply to you. Wait for the release graphics. :)

no, you’re not hearing me.

I’ll pick something unrelated to help you understand :

If something is small, then it is small.

Whether it is small for this or that reason is irrelevant to the “fact” that it is small.

Same thing for something that is ugly, if it’s ugly, it’s ugly.

If the reason that it is ugly is this or that doesn’t change “the fact” that it’s ugly.

(and that video was ugly)

Reader

You made the initial point that graphics are getting worse and not better in games, as if these were final graphics. That’s entirely different from the factor of it being ugly. It is completely irrelevant to the final graphics that will come.

If it upsets you, I have bad news. People have little patience. They will keep demanding stuff like this. It will be ugly. You can either ignore that, or get all upset over things that don’t even matter to what you will play (graphics are usually updated pre-beta in current development norms).

Yup you’re right about that, I’d forgotten about that argument from 8 days ago!

We’ll just see once they increase the ever so sacred “poly count” like you guys say, but having played a few games in Alpha, my experience is that a good looking games look good, even if rough, from the start.

That’s a lot more stylized then I was expecting from this title. Does anyone know if this is early placeholder style art or is this the general direction they are going with?

I was expecting something more along the lines of LiF then Albion.

Reader
drelkag

A dev commented it’s not the final graphics, just low poly to help speed along development.

Reader
Robert Mann

^. Think super-low effort to test things, meant initially for only their own eyes… but people must poke at things.

Reader
Dro Gul

It’s going on 2 years late from their release projection. This is what they have to show. You call it people needing to poke at things. I call it as people trying to defend an obvious disaster. This is all they have after all this time. Shame! Shame! Shame!

low poly and STILL getting 15 FPS?

ok

See https://chroniclesofelyria.com/media/screenshots for screen shots that show what the actual game art is shaping up to look like.

When you’re testing out systems, you don’t want the high end art. You only want something quick and dirty to make sure that the actual functionality is in place before you start adding in the extra overhead involved with high quality graphics, animations, effects, etc.

Even websites are typically developed this way, with a bare-bones initial build that later gets fleshed out with better assets, finalized text, etc. In fact, website developers typically put lorem ipsum (Google it if you don’t know what it is) into the site in place of real text because their only concern is functionality at that point. Form comes later, after they’ve ensured that they have the pages and navigation that they will need. Why develop stuff that you may not end up using or may have to be changed as functionality points up issues?

Reader

Thanks that looks real nice and more along the lines of what I was expecting for this title.

Quite beautiful. Love the half-timbered architectural style they chose.
