Ashes of Creation’s Apocalypse hits early access today – are you trying it out?

It brewing

Ashes of Creation’s Apocalypse battle royale title is officially launching into persistent early access today as planned. As it announced last week, Intrepid Studios is calling Apocalypse a “standalone prequel” to the Kickstarted MMORPG that’ll be “both a testing ground for new systems and content in Ashes of Creation, as well as a unique multi-mode battle arena game where magic, steel, and chaos reign supreme.” Eventually, it’ll expand to PvP modes beyond battle royale.

Worth noting is that early access is free-to-play for folks in NA, EU, and Asia; you just need to register a free Intrepid account. Items purchased in the cash shop carry over into the future MMO.

As we’ve been covering for the last year, Apocalypse was originally pitched as a quick-start PvP alpha for Ashes but morphed into battle royale to test the MMORPG’s hybrid action combat system last year. This past August, the mode hit Steam for a one-day F2P event whose negative reviews suggested that anger and confusion from MMORPG Kickstarter donors remain. Our own PvP columnist, Sam Kashani, wasn’t watching the MMO at all until that test, which he thought was full of potential.

Kickoff for the early access is slated for 3 p.m. EDT, just an hour from now – will you be playing?

I can’t really tell when I’m playing it what’s going wrong, I try to look around and the camera seems to lag behind my mouse movements a lot. But it’s weird… can’t tell if it’s the mouse settings in the options (which are completly nonsensical, with 2 different settings for x and y, and different scales for each as well, so Y has to be negative numbers….). Or do I just have to turn my video settings down?

By the time I’ve adjusted one of the above someone has run up and killed me, since there’s no way to test settings. Then I quit.

But I am curious as to the settings, the slow mouse/look speed is enough to make it unplayable for me, so if anyone knows why it’s doing that maybe I can give it a real try.

I joined as a backer when they first pitched this, and I continue to wish I hadn’t. In fact, between the continued diversions of development from the original MMO vision to this battle royale garbage and the many kickstarter projects we’ve seen create frustration through Epic Games Store exclusives and so on, Ashes of Creation has the honor of being the final project I will ever back.

I am strictly a “buy after release” customer now.

Aaaand it’s up! It’s live on Steam too, with a new name and apparently a clean slate for reviews.

So much for that…lol…already Mostly Negative :)

Yes. I hate BR but I want the rewards that will carry over to the MMO.

Battle royal is not my cup of tea. I’m waiting on actual mmo elements to test like resource harvesting.

I have a bad feeling when crowed funded MMOs release a public, smaller/compact version of their game for “testing” purposes. I feel like I’ve seen this in the past and it leads to seemingly never ending updates before the entire project and company goes under.

Why not test internally(best you can). Then have a strong release with hype. Followed by, hopefully, never ending updates.

This is Fortnite 2.0.

The game initially launched under the premise of something that is completely different than what it is being morphed into.

Fortnite was supposed to be a co-op PvE zombie defense game. It ….sort of still has that aspect. But the main game has become a PvP Battle Royal ….explosion. In a fledgling market, though.

This market is over saturated right now and looking at this game, it is too complicated for the audience. The mechanics, the systems, the controls. There’s way too much convolution involved. Plus, SpellBreak has better mage mechanics than this game; although it going EPIC exclusive vs. Steam launch (as originally planned) is going to absolutely keep it dead, sadly.
