Eternal Magic has been accused of ripping off Guild Wars 2, World of Warcraft, and SMITE

Stop copycatting me!

It’s no secret that Eternal Magic, the now-in-beta PvP MMO from Chinese developer Duoyi, got off to a bad start with the community earlier this year by hosting an actual beauty contest “for the girls.” But perhaps the greater sin, at least in the eyes of the gaming genre, is outright plagiarism.

Indeed, Eternal Magic is being pelted by accusations from gamers that it has outright lifted art assets, audio, and PvP map designs from titles such as Guild Wars 2, SMITE, and World of Warcraft. One Redditor posted a damning picture showing a side-by-side comparison between an Eternal Magic arena and Guild Wars 2’s Skyhammer map, and let’s just say that the similarities are enough that accidental mimicry seems dubious:

Guild Wars 2’s community is not amused. And these PvP areas look quite similar to WoW’s battlegrounds:

We have reached out to Eternal Magic’s PR for a statement from the studio about the accusations and will update when we have it.

We had reports of this from commenters here at this site too earlier in the month. On the Closed Beta announcement you guys did here earlier this month, someone commented how they were ripping off sound assets from WoW and banning people from their website and game who mentioned it.

That’s right folks! You too can can have market access to ~20% of the world’s population in JUST ONE country!

Spoiler
We just get your intellectual property rights..so no suing us when we come out with cheaper carbon copies to sell to the same global marketplace.

Hey be nice, despite being the second largest economy and military on planet Earth, they’re still a “developing country” , so no mean comments allowed :3

The sooner we can get them off that distinction, the better.

China, therefore the most that can really be hoped for is that operations through legal channels with any non-China based distributor will be stopped quickly.

Given the rampant sexism on display, the disgusting way things had been handled, and a setup that screamed soon to be limited to China… I passed on this one within 3 minutes of looking.

The Chinese already learned from that mistake. They don’t use a distributor they don’t collectively have a 51% stake in. It is the “people’s” republic after all..

It’s China. They starved tens of millions of their own people to death. Do you really think they give two shits about art assets?

Chinese developers ripping off assets? Say it isn’t so.

Sadly this has been a regular trend and it goes beyond just games, and of course their government doesn’t give a care.

A game that’d ever copy GW2? That’s unbelievable. Big news for me. (Saw on Reddit they have their Hylek hut too)

I noticed in the first five minutes that they were ripping off sound effects from WoW, namely the boars and wolves, both in their “start attack” sounds, “hit,” and “death” sounds.

I’m not sure about the copying. The screenshot there while similar in layout, and look is not a copy of guild wars 2. It’s not like they lifted the assets from GW 2 because clearly they are different. Now if it was the GW2 assets well then there would be a legal issue there (pending you can get the chinese to play ball and thats another thing all together)

While true the screenshot can be debated, they also outright stole skill icons from gw2 as well.
