The Daily Grind: What’s the longest MMO boycott you’ve run?

Still here, guy.

There are a lot of games I don’t have any desire to play, and then there’s Star Wars: The Old Republic. I still have some affection for the game, but when the title merged away its RP servers entirely back in late 2017, I declared that this was it, I wasn’t picking it back up. Period end. That’s been in place for about two years now, and since I don’t actually expect it to change, I think it’s just going to… stay that way.

Boycotts are a weird thing; saying that you dislike something being done on a corporate level so much that you’re just out until something significant changes. Sometimes, they don’t have to last long; it didn’t take long for Blizzard to realize that the whole RealID fiasco was an awful plan and stop that World of Warcraft boycott. (Whether or not the company will do anything about the current boycotts and protests still remains to be seen.) Sometimes, well, you’re two years in and don’t really expect it to change. So what’s the longest MMO boycott you’ve run?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

I still won’t play anything made by John Smedley, or Brad McQuaid.

I also won’t buy any E.A. titles anymore.

And now I will never play Hearthstone.

I don’t boycott products. I simply vote with my money. I don’t buy games I dislike, or from companies proven to be dishonest.

I do buy products with features that appeal. I never buy before the product is released, and do check reviews to make sure the appealing features are actually delivered.

I really hope other people do the same.

What’s with the SWTOR pic, I’ve been playing SWTOR for 8 years now and never seen a reason for boycotting the game. Sure the game has had dry spells of content, but nothing so offensive (Like what Blizzard recently did.) that would warrant a boycott.

Also your right to RP has never been taken away from you, because of the server merges. If you don’t want to RP in public areas with non-RP’ers around. Then go RP in a Stronghold or Personal Ship. Or for that matter any private instance of a Flashpoint, Operation, or Heroic.

I’m not an RPer, but you really have no clue what good RP is all about do you. Even one such as I have been able to see that SWTOR has done little over the years to foster a good RP environment.

I do not boycott, I just stop playing. Like with LOTRO – I did all quests, went through all areas, then stopped playing. I am not interested in grinding loot or reputation, those are the least fun things for me to do in any MMORPG, and I don’t like instanced PvP so I just quit playing it since there was nothing else to do.

With EVE Online it was slightly different – I quit because I have seen way too many bots and multiboxing plus I got tired of PvP and there was nothing else fun to do when you don’t want to PvP, at least for me, since there is still no walking characters.

Yes, I’ve been boycotting Blizzard as a whole for nonsense they pulled back in 2010 and haven’t looked back. This is my shocked face that the company has continued to be garbage.

I also boycotted ArenaNet for about 2 years after that Price/Fries misstep. Just recently went back to GW2 after news of O’Brien leaving. Found I still find the game enjoyable, but there’s no way that I’ll ever think ArenaNet as a company is anything other than trash as well.

With all the options we have today, there are plenty of games from better companies to spend our money on. It’s very easy to just go play something else.

I don’t really do individiual game boycotts.. BUT I have done a whole company boycott a time or two :)

I boycotted NCsoft games initially back in 2009 when a couple I helped in COH one day just up and decided to rob our SG and despite having boatloads of proof and it being a breach of their CoC rules their support pretty much just said tough sh** we could care less.

Numerous other run in’s with rude and incompetent NCSoft support in between who was just incredibly lazy, rude and uninterested.

I gave them a second chance with Wildstar but when it went F2P and they did the whole redeem your benefits if you were a previous player thing, I logged in went to retrieve my benefits and boxes etc.. most of the stuff was there but the character slots and some other things weren’t so I ticketed the issues, and over a month of back and forths they simply denied my account was a Collectors edition and outright called me a liar. So I provided them with the receipt of my collector’s purchase as irrefutable proof (always keep your receipts people!) to which they could no longer deny, they accepted it but refused to apologise.

I told them that level of disgusting abhorrent customer service was intolerable and that they could kiss my a** before I’d ever play another NCSoft game and from that point on I haven’t and will NOT.
Absolutely one of the worst money-grubbing companies ever with THE MOST incompetent customers supports in existence. Every consumer has limits and they sailed well beyond the horizon of mine.

These muppets are a huge part of why I am so pro holding companies accountable for their actions and treatment of their customers.

So all told somewhere between 7-10 years :)

I also boycotted Craptic for a few years after they decided to lie about plans for the Klingon faction and essentially tried to Re-write history by denying what they had said for YEARS previous. And also in objection to their greedy PWE based overpricing and EVERYTHING lockbox approach and the fact their support is pretty much just automated e-mails, practically zero human contact.
But they are more or less on a barely tolerable level for me atm.. as their story content is really good when it does happen.

I would also say because of recent events Blizzard just made my sh** list too.

I don’t think my leaving LotRO for 3+ years (for the trait redesign) counts as a “boycott,” since I had a lifetime sub. If anything, having one less non-paying player sucking up bandwidth was a boon for them. :/

I’ve never bought a game that required installing Origin or Uplay. The last EA game I bought was… Sims 3, I think? So ten years plus. I honestly have no idea the last Ubi game I bought, since before Uplay, they were putting Starforce on everything.

The longest boycott I have running is of Wal-Mart. I haven’t given them a dime since the mid-90s. At first, it was because they were trying to build a store on part of George Washington’s Birthplace. But they’ve done so much social ill since then, I don’t expect to ever walk into one.

If you’re generous you could say I’ve “boycotted” the meat industry for 30 years. When I was a teenager, I didn’t like the idea of anything needlessly suffering when I could survive eating something I liked less. These days, of course, there’s greater awareness of the vast pollution it creates.

I left Maplestory 2 when it was still new and fresh and very fun for me because of an issue with Support and haven’t been back. I hope that I have the willpower to never go back to it in principle. I’m not boycotting all of Nexon’s games, just that one. Just the one I feel Support screwed me over for something that was their fault and they refused to fix.

I was one of their high tiered founders. I was spending money left and right in the game after it was released. I was blowing hundreds in the game already on silly things. I wanted them to replace a $2 item for me out of principle because a bug in their system made me lose it. They wouldn’t even consider it and didn’t want to take any responsibility for the bug at all, so they get no more of my money.

Customer Service can either make a life long spender of me in a game, or make me leave the game completely. In Maplestory 2 it made me leave completely.

Though I always said I reserve the right to play again and just not ever spend in it, I don’t think I’ll take that chance. If I play a game I want to spend on stuff in it so I just won’t tempt myself by going back.

I’m pretty sure Maplestory 2 is my only online game boycott.

I would have loved to have boycotted Ubisoft as a company but they release far too many things that I like to play. I’m not going to cost myself those fun experiences, and I’m not going to steal, so I still buy their stuff.

Oh… Is that what I was doing?
