Star Trek Online brings Awakening to console and launches a breast cancer charity event

Let the games of catch-up begin! Star Trek Online players on PS4 and Xbox One can now get the same stuff that PC players have had for a little while now with today’s official launch of the Awakening update, along with a special charity event to raise money for breast cancer research.

The stuff in the Awakening update should be old hat to most, including a new episode starring Star Trek Discovery’s Anthony Rapp, five new Patrols, a new Task Force Operation, and the Mycelial Crisis event that lets players earn a tier six Elachi ship. New UI elements for accessing Patrols and Events are also added, and the new Klingon Balth and the U.S.S. Somerville ships can be purchased starting on Monday, October 21st, in the Intel Science Bundle.

What’s genuinely new to Star Trek Online players is the start of a charity drive in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month. STO has teamed up with Groupees to sell a special bundle of in-game items including pink Tribbles and tier six starships, with 85% of the proceeds going to the National Breast Cancer Foundation up to a total of $75,000. Details on this special charity event can be read in this blog.

Sold out already…
Sold out of virtual goods…
Sold out of virtual goods raising $40k of which they are allowed to take up to $75k in operating costs…

Um.

Oh, edit, they’re donating a max of $75k? The logic of this giveaway just makes no sense to me. Donate money, but don’t donate too much, please.

It’s bizarre, and they’ve done it before. When they talked the actress who played Leeta into reprising her role they *also* had a charity thing. One of the unlocks was an account-wide Holo Leeta bridge officer (in your choice of Evil Hotpants or Dabo Bodystocking.) And by the time I found out that the event even existed, they’d already sold out of the tier with the bridge officer. :(

But at least I noticed the Humble Bundle one in time to get almost the entire TOS crew (holographic replicas, obviously.) Well, all but Kirk. Supposedly they managed to really annoy Shatner, and somehow he actually owns the rights to his likeness as Kirk. (Kirk does appear in one of the time travel missions – knocked out and face down on the floor, and about to be murdered by the evil time travelers that you’re there to stop.)

Because the first lot sold out so quick they have put some more up. So your still in with a shot 2303 bundles left of the new batch at the time of me posting this ;)

Not sure if you’re still trying to get the bundle, but they seem to have just added more of the one with all four ships. As I type this, there’s still about 2500 left at that tier. (At 3:30pm PDT on Oct 22.) Good luck!

This one is a douuble whammy, not only do you get to support a great cause you can get upto FOUR T6 ships and other stuff for as little as $10 for doing so… compared to the usual cost for T6 ships that is great value for money.

works pretty much the same as humble bundle does for those unfamiliar with Groupee you pay what you want, but the more you pay the more you get.
