Chronicles of Elyria shares another pre-alpha video that focuses on environmental sound

There are plenty of ways for MMOs to set a scene. Visuals are certainly one of the more important, but audio plays just as big of a factor, whether its the environmental soundscape or the background music — heck, we have a whole column devoted to MMO music. The latest shared footage from Soulbound Studio recorded within the “PrElyria” pre-alpha build of Chronicles of Elyria is all about sound design, specifically of a wetlands location.

“Sound design in Chronicles of Elyria will be based on your actual surroundings, not just a track that loops in a particular zone,” states the video’s blurb. “Animals, weather, and even the area you are exploring can all be a factor into what you hear. That way, you can react appropriately to sounds you hear and let the music enhance the action.” Some of those “appropriate” sounds shown off in the video include birds, a campfire, and material-specific footfall noises. The water is suspiciously quiet, though.

It’s a short video at 1:40 — the first 16 seconds of which are a black screen — but you can get your eyes and ears full below. Just remember, it’s pre-alpha, all material subject to change, yadda yadda yadda.

Since when it became cartoony?

Public domain birdsong. Amazing stuff. Worthy of showcasing in a video.

How long have they been, and will be, in a “pre-alpha” stage?

I just can’t get over the art direction they’ve decided on with this project. It really strikes me as low-budget, solo indie dev stuff.

Supposedly it’s all just placeholder for the photorealistic art that’s coming later. And if you buy that, would you be interested in a gently used bridge?

Nobody has to pretend to love the game and the developers, and I find the selling of titles etc problematic to say the leasr but just making cynical stuff up for laughs is not cool. Criticize the game and the developers for real issues, don’t troll.

Will the graphics be better? Yes. Will they be the best graphics ever? Not likely. But, assuming they get to put up a finished product, they will be much improved. And graphics don’t make a MMO.

I think most can agree to that – good graphics can help, but a game doesn’t need graphics that put even top of the line gaming rigs to their knees to be good.

It’s not the final graphics – this is basic stuff. They won’t have finished graphics for launch at this point; no game ever has.

These graphics are only slightly better than the pre-vis artwork that stunt coordinators create from laptops to map out a stunt, not something from a would-be game developer this decade. They should be ashamed of themselves for continuing to try and say they have done right by those who have sunk money into this. They raise over 500k this past month and then put this joke out to butter up people for their next e-begfest which is due to drop any week now…. but yeah keep defending them by saying that no one puts out release graphics so early in the development process, whatever allows you to sleep better.
