One Shots: The miseries of camping

20

Isn’t camping wonderful? Reconnecting with nature, smelling like smoke, and sleeping with a canvas wall between you and predators? Obviously, it’s not for everyone, even seasoned adventurers in MMORPGs who would rather bunk in their luxurious estates than rough it in the wild.

When it comes to setting up a tent in Lord of the Rings Online, count Hirku out. “C-c-couldn’t have a nice t-tavern challenge for O-o-o-one Shots. N-n-noooooo, had to be c-c-c-camping!”

“Good ol’ times of leveling in Guild Wars 2,” Miol shared. “You would find some dutiful NPCs, camping out on a distant trade route, whose biggest concerns are giant spiders, where you would gladly go to their home caves and toss them around!”

Charming.

Minimalistway is getting indoctrinated into the supreme weirdness that is Final Fantasy XIV’s Hildibrand quests.

“I’ll leave this screen, it’s from best quest line ever, there are funny quests in MMOs and there is Hildibrand Manderville quests, these quests made me LOL for real.”

Back to camping real quick, IronSalamander8 is off to summer camp in what I think is Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville. Looks quaint and rustic, just the sort of place to build character and spread poison ivy!

“Well, guess what?” Rafael asked. “I’m camping in Anthem. Unfortunately, it is a bit of a ghost town here with the bones of broken dreams littering the ground literally. How ironic, no? On the other hand, I did get a swanky new Mass Effect armor set! Like any N7 fan, I’m easily distracted when I can dress like a Quarian. Well, a colorful Quarian.”

What’s your favorite watering hole in an MMO? For this week’s challenge, share your favorite in-game tavern, inn, or social gathering spot and let us know why you love it!

Every week, One Shots shines a spotlight on the best community screenshots from your MMO adventures. If you have a great pic to share, email it to justin@massivelyop.com with the subject “One Shots.” Make sure that the picture is over 880px wide and comes with a description or story!

Oh boy, am I late to this! Thank you for the plug! /bow

One of the last spots in GW2’s Lion’s Arch, where there’s still some of the old charm left.
In a cave right at the coast, it’s actually possible to wash up at this tavern. Even if most have moved on since the Battle for L. A., you can still have a chat with one of the more feathered regulars here… …or have a fight, as they don’t care to step on your food or worse! o.O

Huh. I kind of like the Quarian armor. Too bad that it’s almost certainly a limited reward/purchase or something and not available now. But I suppose it was a nice surprise for anyone still actually playing the game. Oh well.

Dear Justin,

While on my way to Star Wars: The Old Republic to take some pics of a favorite gathering place, I suddenly found myself on the planet Dathomir in Star Wars: Jedi Knight Fallen Order.

“No problem,” I thought, “Dathomir is a ruin by this point in the timeline. What could possibly go wrong?”

Never ask that question. Especially not while gaming.

Did you know that there is at least one Force Witch still on Dathomir? Yep, and she’s still mad at you for not returning her CDs after you guys broke up. We all told you not to date witches, Justin. When will you learn?

Please send help. Or sandwiches. It’s really hard to find things to eat on a ruined planet.

May the Force be with me,

Your pal,

Secret

Hey! Thanks for the Quarian shout out. Love the gear, and it is good to see Anthem get some positive pub. Lol.

This week, I’m going with an Elder Scrolls cap. It’s nothing special but I do love hanging out in the Rosy Lion in Daggerfall. Stay there long enough and an adventure will follow. What does that mean? Well, for one, marks are easy to come by and two, well let’s just say it is profitable, ok?

I’ve made no secret of my affinity for Red Dead Online. Despite the launch issues for the first couple of days, my patience for the PC version has been rewarded by some of the most immersive gameplay I’ve experienced for some time in a multi-player environment. The world-building is top-notch, and the open world allows the freedom to play at any pace and engage in so many activities.

Of course, the saloon (“in-game tavern”) is an integral part of any good setting in the American old west, and RDO has its fair share, and some are a little more refined than others. I don’t much fancy the Parlour House in Rhodes, but would much rather hitch my horse outside the proper saloon in Valentine…complete with the long bar, piano, and women of ill-repute. Of course the poker table in the corner comes in handy for a bit of Texas Hold’em at the end of the evening after hunting, train-jumping, collecting bounties, and executing villains.

(Oh, and for those averse to PvP, I’ve not yet been shot by another player in many hours of play.)

I’ll be there soon. I’ve been waiting a long time to play making the conscious decision to forgo buying it on console. But I do want it patched up a bit before I play. And, I do have many other games on my plate at the moment.

We used to have a spot in Brisban Wildlands before the guild went its seperate ways and into guild halls. And in CoH: Homecoming, there’s Atlas Park though not as much these days.

For today, my WoL is taking a break from running and/or swimming every which way across the Ruby Sea to take a breather on the streets of good ol’ Ul’dah.

I know little about FFXIV (and arguably, I have no taste), but I love those shoes.

FFXIV’s fashion game is really second to none, and I’m saying this as someone who still enjoys Fashion Wars!

I knew a woman who had a pair of those shoes. They were surprisingly difficult to tie up properly, if you didn’t give it your full attention. They sure looked nice, though, as you say.

It apparently acts as a fishing spot too. o.O

Fishbelly’s Pub! Yup. Love that place. There are tables located right in its mouth. And, it is in my fave BnS locale, Saphire Basin.

A handful of people meeting up anywhere in Secret World is grounds for a party. We’ll forego the usual grousing about losing many of the great places we used to gather for parties due to zone caps and show off some of the fun places that remain in SWL.

I’d like to say The Crusades as it’s one of the places I’ve spent the most time hanging out in, but really, the lighting is shite and takes a LOT of work to get a good shot.

The Albion is another great place to hang out and throw a party, though lighting there can also be problematic.

A party can break out anywhere, even in the streets.

Or a popular dance floor can shut down to make room for a solemn vigil for a lost friend.

In short, all of Secret World is a great place to gather, relax with old friends, and meet some new ones. All it takes is a place and a hello. :)

(Here’s hoping they post in the right order) Well, The Crusades posted at the bottom, but close enough.

Thanks for the feature!

Nassir makes even a ragged desert camp in Secret World Legends the happening place to be: “BOOM! Just like Bollywood movie with happy ending and musical number! AYYY-AY-AY-AY-AY!!!”

Favorite social gathering spot is Fanow in the Rak’tika Greatwood.

Side note: We all have that special friend who insists on being a bit…extra.

Second favorite (at least this week) has been the Firmament…because Ishgard Housing won’t build itself :)
