MMO Book of Travels’ Kickstarter finishes successfully with $261K, hitting all stretch goals

It’s been one small step for video game crowdfunding, but one large step for Book of Travels. The “serene” tiny online RPG ultimately raked in $261,183 by the conclusion of its Kickstarter campaign over the weekend, thanks to contributions by 7,034 backers.

Not only does this mean that the project will enjoy additional funding to flesh out its game, but all of the crowdfunding campaign’s stretch goals were met during its run. These stretch goals include a traveller’s portal, an in-game journal, shared memories, pets, and even free copies of Might and Delight’s online Meadow game.

Might and Delight said the campaign was “transformational” and vowed to keep the communication coming on the MMO’s development as it progresses toward beta next year. It also gave a glimpse of the fully filled-out Travellers’ Meadow, an in-game field populated with as many night flowers as there were Kickstarter backers.

I almost backed then wondered if I was crazy so I didn’t. If the game comes out next year I will play it for sure though.

And now the task of eternal fundraising truly begins.

This studio has put out like 7 or 8 games already without abusive fundraising, and it’s clear from interviews they had funding to have already built most of this game before going to Kickstarter for this one, so I don’t expect the shenanigans that we see from other companies. This is the only game I backed all year. (The other thing I backed was a book for my daughter.)

Agree with Bree. This is one of those rare kickstarters that exceeded all goals mainly because of on the developers previous track record and pre-exisiting loyal fanbase (which they have for a reason). The fact that it looks like an amazing an unique game was almost a given with Might & Delight developing it.

I’ll temporarily change my tune the first time I’m wrong about one of these. So far, in over 6 years, I’m batting 1.000. Pretty decent record.

The way you put it, it is so broad it can be told for any mmo that is monetized, since they monetize the games throughout their existence cause while they are hobbies and entertainment for us, every game is offering jobs to some employees/devs and they need to make money. No game is offered truelly free.

the matter should be if it gets delivered and I get strong indications it will be. I am not 100% sure if it will be for me(artstyle is a bit too “kiddish” and lack of proper communication system) but it most likely will be done. That said I may also like it a lot because I like Dofus and Wakfu which do have “kiddish” artstyle too – its all in the gameplay
