The Daily Grind: What MMO without mounts could really use ’em?

A while back on the Massively OP Podcast, Justin and I got to talking about Dungeons and Dragons Online’s then-newly-announced mounts and how funny it was that this game was one of the last mount holdouts, one of the last mid-to-top-tier MMOs that didn’t have mounts and still needed ’em. I didn’t say it out loud, but you can bet I thought it in my head: Ultima Online had mounts at launch in 1997, for crying out loud! Every MMO needs mounts, right? They’re fun! They satisfy the collection itch! They make us go fast! And yes, when monetized they help fund games!

Interestingly, we had a hard time coming up with an MMO that doesn’t have mounts, but surely there are a few out there that just aren’t quite springing to mind. MOP reader Furin came up with one biggun: Guild Wars 1! What other MMO without mounts could really use ’em?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

I think it’s funny that you mention thinking it was funny that DDO had recently mentioned introducing mounts and mentioning how you were thinking about, but not mentioning at that time, other games, that the likes of which shall remain unmentioned at this time but that had – at launch – had mounts available, because I was thinking about how I wasn’t gonna mention, but since you brought it up, I gotta say – the mounts that are now infact available in DDO make for a severely underwhelming, if not downright disappointing, experience. I took the steps, I did the thing. I got the stuff and I made the trade. I held the reigns… and I found it to be painful, so – I set it free, relieved of it’s duty. Honestly, though, instead of putting it out to pasture, I’d wished I could’ve put it out of it’s misery.

ALL of them, because frankly if you are calling your game an MMO and you do not have mounts or housing etc.. then you are false advertising :)

Though it might not sound to people like one that may need mounts due to the warp points and such – I really think that if the current design stays the way it is they could actually use them in Torchlight Frontiers.

The “Battle Pass” type system they’re doing in Torchlight Frontiers takes you back through all of these earlier areas to earn points in them every week. While there is a teleport spot in the middle of each area, there is actually quite a lot of running time through areas to get to dungeons out across the plains where there is no benefit in killing the monsters there so you just are running through. After you do it a number of times it becomes more than a bit tedious. They really could use mounts for those areas.

Either that or just a “run” type function for each class that is different for each and doesn’t take up one of the precious few skill slots.

I am pretty sure City of Heroes doesn’t need mounts…

…but that’s not what The DG question was asking. So I dunno. :)

Not mounts perhaps, but vehicles certainly.

Given that mounts are a general purpose item, they make sense in almost any scenario. Especially if you have activities spread over larger areas.

They would be cool in Project Gorgon for those who dont play as animal and may be good in Shroud of the Avatar provided they work on Overworld too. Does EQ1 have mounts? I didnt play it a lot and didnt get one. Star Trek Online, some high tech mounts wouldnt be bad but then again I dont remember any in Star Trek movies

EQ1 does have mounts but unless it’s easier nowadays, it took a long time to get them. My SK main got hers via spending AAs for the unholy steed so that’s end game stuff. You can get some earlier, clerics loved them as you regen mana faster when seated or on a mount and when on a mount you didn’t get that extra aggro from being seated.

What about the ground vehicles in the awful, awful Star Trek: Nemesis?

I mean..they have starships..

Well that looked more like mad max buggies rather than anything “techy” so its hard to include them

Overall Nemesis wasnt terrible, I classify it as fairly good(6 out of 10 or so). It just wasnt better or close to equal to the previous ones and that magnified its misfires since we naturally compared it to previous masterpieces
