A Jesuit priest is trying out a Vatican Minecraft server to encourage non-toxic behavior

Yourcraft.

We’re familiar with the ways that online games, even generally rather innocent ones like Minecraft, can wind up being breeding grounds for some of the nastiest behaviors human beings can conceive of. This isn’t news to anyone reading this, we know. But Father Robert Ballecer is looking to also prove how they can be a positive force as well with an experiment in having an official Vatican server for the game, encouraging players to come together and collaborate in a space that is specifically curated to nip any toxic behaviors in the bud.

Father Ballecer has a background in engineering, so he seems like a natural fit for this particular sort of experiment; if you’re interested in seeing how it works for yourself, there’s information available on his website, although it may be getting hammered by connections at the moment. (Let’s hope it’s the sort of hammering when a lot of people are curious rather than a lot of people trying to kick over sandcastles.) Now go in peace, in the name of the pickaxe, the inventory, and the holy crafting table.

Absolutely no way this can go wrong.

Basically priests running a playground.

Guess they’re getting with the times like the rest of the predators.

Look, just because the Catholic Church spent nearly four billion dollars between 1950 and 2015 to settle lawsuits doesn’t mean they’re predators! It’s just that thousands and thousands of people were lying, coincidentally telling very similar stories.

I’m going to be honest, i wasn’t expecting this thread to take this specific turn.

Haha, first thing that went through my mind when I read the title.

I would of been surprised if it didn’t actually.

But how many times has subjects been derailed over the raising of the specter of pedobears, real, perceived or imagined? Last it was patrons going QAnon over the introduction of the Shai to BDO. Personally, I think these subjects should be address separately as the articles raises them. But that position doesn’t stop others from going there when it wasn’t really called for. /sigh

Terrible people who belong to a terrible organization that does terrible things to children should be called out at every opportunity. They should not be allowed to hide under the pretense of decorum.

One thing most organized religions have in common is that they were founded by men and run by men for the benefit of men.

Just like Riot Games swore up and down there was nothing to their sex scandal. It was all just guys having a good time and never, ever meant any harm.

Here’s the thing though, I can disagree with the tenants of Catholicism, to which I do. And I can also agree that certain practices within the faith incubate very problematic behavior. But I am never going to assume that all Catholics are shotacons for one. Nor will I accuse those who administer the faith with the same. That just borders on phobia, IMO…which in of itself is also highly problematic. (Also see: Why I also have issues with Islamophobia, even though I am an atheist.)

That said, your crusade again has nothing to do with the subject at hand. Unless you can demonstrate this Priest is running a peado ring Jeffrey Epstein style with his Mindcraft project, you should really shut about it. Focus on the project itself, instead of spamming it up with off-topic subject matter that really has nothing to do with article at hand. Thnkx!

Regrettably I don’t think you’re entirely wrong.

We had an entire Royal Commission into the grim subject and I don’t think a lot folk here can ever view Organised Religion the same ever again, especially in relation to how it relates to anything children. The findings on churches of all kinds faiths opened up a rabbit hole of abuse which went deeper than most folk expected it to go.

I mean we ended up convicting a bloody Cardinal, only a few months prior he was the third most powerful man in the Vatican, now he’s sitting in jail cell here lol.
And the Church still hasn’t officially denounced him. Disgusting.

Ehh, while I won’t defend the catholic church in this regard (I’d have to be a little crazy to do so), people tend to have this sort of tunnel vision towards the church when they think of child abuse, while the overwhelming majority of those abuses happen in households or schools. The church is a good distance away from the lead. Sure, they’re the most hypocritical of the three, and that makes the crime even worse, but my point is basically that this problem is very widespread and far reaching and focusing so much on the crimes within the church may actually be counterproductive. It’s better for the movies and for the headlines, but not necessarily for the objective of preventing these crimes.

No joke Jesuits are always ahead, no wonder why they’re expelled & persecuted multiple times on various countries and finally abolished by the Pope back on the XVIII century.

I saw Jesuit priest and Minecraft server and was really hoping it would be Padre SJ. I was not disappointed.
