Massively OP Podcast Episode 249: Houses and Ponies Online

7

On this week’s show, Bree and Justin anticipate two EverQuest expansion releases, Star Citizen’s pricey space mall, celebrate Book of Travels’ strong Kickstarter campaign, temporary MMO servers, and whether or not we’d play a hypothetical game called Houses and Ponies Online!

Please note that this episode is partly sponsored by Gameforge; there’s no segment, but there is a 30-second ad spot for Kingdom Under Fire 2 at the very beginning and very end of the show.

It’s the Massively OP Podcast, an action-packed hour of news, tales, opinions, and gamer emails! And remember, if you’d like to send in your own letter to the show, use the “Tips” button in the top-right corner of the site to do so.

I live for the ding!

Seriously, that made me miss leveling so much. It no longer gives me the satisfaction of hitting a milestone

I need Book of Travels to be the serene tiny multiplayer game they pitched. I’m very much looking forward to seeing more. I am disappointed that they don’t have an official forum, but we’ll give it time and see if communication flows smoothly both ways.

The PvP talk reminded me of the idea PvPers often bring up that ganking encourages players to log onto their mains to encourage more PvP. That tends to miss the mark when the ganking is of a player who is playing their main. I don’t feel that attitude does much to create a healthy PvP community, and it is not very effective more often than not. If anything their bullheaded attitude only drives other players away and hurts themselves in the long run by reducing their game’s population.

It also brought to mind the real-life parallel we already know about disproportionate skill levels being matched up against each other and how poorly that goes. There’s a reason sports has set up varying levels of professionalism and not just thrown a hodge podge in there. Even in games we see how much more popular structured PvP tends to be compared to an open world free for all.

I think that’s an additional detail developers struggle to address when it comes to open world PvP systems as it needs to go beyond the appropriate ruleset, such as flagging, and work on avoiding an unfettered, chaotic PvP mess. Scaling, for one, comes to mind as a means to combat this problem.

Here’s a Wayback archive of that level-up sounds website:
https://web.archive.org/web/20131217142408/http://www.dorkclub.com/ding/

Unfortunately it seems like the actual sounds won’t download from there.

I actually had saved a few of them locally when the site was still running, but not many.

A podcast…with puppets.

I don’t think those visuals will translate well in the audio medium but hey why the heck not. Certainly won’t be the weirdest thing I’ve ever seen..heard…sneard?? lol
