Path of Exile’s Conquerors of the Atlas update sparks a $53,750 boss kill challenge

A new content update for an MMO is exciting enough, but when you pair it up with $53,750 worth of prizes, it blows off the roof. This week on December 13th, Path of Exile is pushing out its Conquerors of the Atlas update, and with it will come a special Awakener kill event.

Basically, players will race to kill this new world boss in hardcore, solo self-found mode in order to win both cash and microtransaction prizes. Twitch streamer Zizaran is fronting $30,000 in cash for the event, with Grinding Gear adding $23,750 in cosmetics, pets, and other in-game goodies.

Speaking of the patch, Grinding Gear Games has several major balance adjustments coming on the 13th too. The biggest of these changes is for bow and ranged attacks — lots of buffs, mostly. Minion builds will get a few more tweaks, and chill, shock, and freeze abilities are going to become more reliable.

Yeah, I’m pretty sure I’m not in the running for this one. Even before I got drawn off into ESO I wasn’t that leet.

Also, I predict much crying and gnashing of teeth from people who don’t normally play either hardcore or SSF (I play the latter but definitely not the former.)

If I was on pc i might have given it a shot not that I would have stood a chance but it would have added a bit of extra spice.

As it is I am struggling a little playing POE with the PS4 control scheme. While I think I will be ok once I get used to it I am going to take it slow and steady when the new league starts.

Since which day PoE turned to be a MMO ?… geez… Even MOP is following this fake trend: “multiplayer game = mmo” ?

Might i suggest you click the about link at the top of the screen. I think the relevent section reads:

“If it’s multiplayer and online we probably cover it”

It does fall within their stated gaming interests and coverage. This is not a new thing or a sudden change and has been this way for years

Also, the MMORPG gold rush is long over. Sticking strictly to that specific genre would give the staff a lot less to work with.

They can talk about everything they want. But implying PoE as a MMO is my concern with the beginning of this article.

I guess you didn’t read the article. Justin starts it with “A new content update for an MMO is exciting enough, but when you pair it up with $53,750 worth of prizes…”. That sentence emplies that PoE is a MMO. Or did I understand it wrong ?

I did read it and MMO is used as a short hand for a lot of things these days.

I am assuming from your comment you took it to mean mmorpg in the traditional sense like wow etc, which it isn’t.

If you check the tags at the bottom of the article massively flag this game as an mmoarpg That is as good a description as any for Path of Exile. There are a lot of folks playing it’s online and it’s an action role playing game.

Either way no worries I enjoy the coverage poe gets and if it’s not your cup of tea there are plenty of other articles to read instead.

….

I play PoE since the beta. And from what I know, GGG doesn’t call it a MMO.
A lot of people play LoL. It doesn’t make it a mmo. Same with a lot of online multiplayer games.

Ah… Why do I even bother with it ?
