The Daily Grind: What was the best new zone added to an MMO in 2019?

Thanks to MOP reader Agemyth’s suggestion way back in 2016, we’ve been debating the best new zone added to an MMO for the last couple of years. And now we’re back around again!

I love this topic because new zones are one of the things that really gets me interested in MMOs and new content in old MMOs especially. I like map exploration and new horizons! I think my personal nom this year would go to Guild Wars 2’s Grothmar Valley, added at the start of the new “saga” seasonal thingymabob. In spite of being a dieselpunkish Charr zone, it’s actually got so much of that autumnal old-school Ascalon vibe going for it, plus I adore that the map has a ton of non-traditional content to play around with.

What would you say was the best new zone added to an MMO in 2019?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

For SWTOR, I was torn between Mek-sha and Ossus. I think I finally settled on Ossus because it was fully developed on release. It’s an interesting location and good dailies spread throughout the map. Mek-sha was also tempting. I love the look of the place, and despite the drop in fps, I like exploring there. But the planet needed some additional repeatable missions besides the two Heroics. It was just updated yesterday to provide one mission that changes…but what a waste of a unique location. There is so much more that could be done there. Here’s a shot of Ossus and one of Mek-sha.

My screenshots don’t do it justice, but for me…Il Mheg was the best zone added in 2019 (from Shadowbringers FF14)

Was Thunderforge Keep added to Gw2 in early 2019 or late 2018, if 2019 then that’s the zone.

I’m not sure about Elswyr because I haven’t even got to those zones yet on my Necromancer yet (just hit Wrothgar at level 48 and I split my time between that and early Dominion zones with my wife’s Khajit).

To Nazjatar, or to Mechagon, that is the question:
Whether ’tis nobler in the mind to suffer,
The slings and arrows of outrageous Naga.
Or to take arms against a sea of mechs,
And by opposing end them. To gear—to die…

Mechagon for sure. Nazjatar gave me an ulcer trying to navigate that place. Mechagon also has all the machines which fits my goblin main better and was easier to get around in to boot.

Mechagon by far. Nazjatar was one of those places that was horrendous to navigate on foot, which is a major issue when grinding a reputation in that zone is what unlocks flying.

Mechagon, IMO, also has a much better aesthetic.

Naga please! Mechagon is the clear winner.
