The Daily Grind: What was the best MMO emulator or rogue server in 2019?

So 2019 turned out to be a pretty damn interesting year for fans of old MMORPGs. Not only did WoW Classic launch and bring World of Warcraft Vanilla emus to their knees, but City of Heroes was forced out of hiding and rogue servers are now everywhere. And we’re here for it.

On MOP, we have an informal policy not to lavish press on rogue servers for live and active MMORPGs because we’re not trying to get anybody shut down here and it’s kinda tacky to be flaunting stolen code and assets from devs are actively working on a live game. But on the other hand, we’re generally eager to cover community efforts to revive truly dead and abandoned MMOs, especially when the original studios have given their blessing (or at least not smacked everyone with C&Ds).

We’ve stopped short of making this a formal award, at least not yet, so consider this an informal one: What was the best MMO emulator or rogue server in 2019?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Thing is, I can’t remember if I liked Star Wars Galaxies or City of Heroes when I tried them. I didn’t get a sub to either, but that was because I never have the money for subs.
I’m tempted to try to find legit copies of both games, so I can try ’em out on the rogue servers.

Star Wars Galaxies legend’s the best hands down.

I’ve spent many a good month this year at Homecoming, so they’ll easily get my vote. I can’t quite go back all the way to 2012, but this has been the next best thing. And I can’t put words to the feeling of having CoH there for when I feel the urge for heroics.

I wish more would play Earth & Beyond emulator. It’s a game that needs more people and it’s really good with a great community.

Vanguard Saga of Heroes…not officially up yet, but just the fact that it’s not gone forever has me hopeful.

Project Ascension. Its a custom WoW server with tons of unique things:
-Classless
-Draft mode (every 2 level you choose between 3 random abilities while leveling)
-Random Enchantments system (unique effects that you can attach to items to compliment your build)
-No soulbound items. Wear what you want.
-Invasions
-Boards with varied daily quests
-High risk or no risk PvP – you can choose between easily. High Risk = you loose items if you die in PvP. But you can loot raid gear from common mobs in the world.
-Optional permadeath mode.
-Fel mode. When you play as burning legion soldier.

All this among other things. Also its very stable and bug free.
Talking about Blizzlike servers, Tauri WoW (Mists of Pandaria server) is the best private server hands down. Incredibly polished.

Btw, not many people know, but there is another custom server for Everquest. It is called Shards of Dalaya. It has EQ graphics, but all content including quests and raids is custom. And there is lengthy main storyline.

To anyone considering this awful drivel:

Do not fucking touch Project Ascension. It’s a known cashgrab of a server, with several broken features and extreme P2W.

I’m sick and tired of you trying to uplift cashgrabs, Oleg. Fuck off with this shit.

The ONLY thing correct you said in all this crap was about Tauri.

Project 1999 Green and Teal servers are blowing away a lot of emulations by being committed to their goals and having a great administrative staff. It’s quite honestly the best version of Classic EQ.

Project 1999 is killing it once again with their own classic EQ server

SWG: Legends. CoH Homecoming is a close second but they didn’t get to the point where the game has the same ammount of content and love poured into it. It’ll require some more time.

CoH Homecoming has been my home for the game’s current state. Pretty happy with the crew and how it’s been working after the understandable teething issues.
