Leaderboard: What was the most overrated MMO of 2019?

Yeah, this is always a fun one. We’ve been running an award for the most underrated MMO for years now, and we’ve tried to tag-team it with a poll for most overrated too. As we’ve pointed out for the last couple of years, someone always, always jumps into the comments for our underrated winner with a well-actually about how overrated it is.

My dude, this poll was made for you.

What was the most overrated MMO of 2019? What MMO just doesn’t deserve the praise heaped upon it? Choose up to three from this selection of some of the larger MMOs around in the west right now…

FFXIV – I have had some enjoyment in this game but I definitely feel it’s this.

IronSalamander8 .

I voted WoW since it’s a middling game at best, even when I did play a ton of it with our guild back in Wrath days. I voted for it here since Classic was a thing and yet our guild, many of which did play it, are already done with it!

There are other contenders like BDO (gorgeous but tedious even at low levels), and ESO (just can’t into it), but nothing screams overrated like WoW has.

1,2,3 and GO! Yeah, seriously, first three all were highly overrated. A few others on the list have issues, but not nearly as much positive coverage/hype overall, or have negative coverage that balances it out. The only reason WoW gets up there is classic, which got a lot of traction and glowing praise despite some major issues and screw ups that were essentially glossed over.

BD, Destiny 2, and AA (unchained update) were other high contenders.

As usual, I exclude not actually released in persistent form games, so SC doesn’t register to my listing.

How to vote on the Most Overrated MMO:
1.) Make a list of all the games you don’t like.
2.) Pick the three most popular.
3.) Vote!

Elder scrolls and it’s not even close. Leveling is boring, storyline is trash nothing feels good besides maybe pvp.. and it’s nothing but a cash shop with swallow game play attached to a game that was clearly not an elder scrolls game when they started making it.

WoW Classic, the maximum expression of “you think you do but you dont”

Of the many people I know who were raving about it, only one of them lasted long enough to renew for a second month, all the rest were completly done the first 3 weeks

Dankey Kang

You can bring the game back, but you can’t bring 2005 you back.

Bryan Correll

The games I consider objectively bad typically have poor enough reputations that it would be unfair to call them overrated. Generally I can see the appeal of more reputable games even when they’re not ‘for me.’

So then I voted for SWL because it’s a dumbed down version of something I really liked that (IMO) was released hoping for a quick cash grab without any real expectation that it would have any long term viability.

It’s been a long time since I touched it (the PS3 version lol), but Final Fantasy XIV.
I hated the structure of that game. It’s just endless cutscenes and extremely rigid design. It just feels clunky and not well thought out imo.

I’ve been reminded though in a previous article that, “SC haters won’t actually admit that the game is very spectacular even as it stands right now in development, but they’ll certainly be one of the first players to log in to the Verse when it goes live.” Er…when and if if goes live, I suppose. o.O

Bruno Brito

but they’ll certainly be one of the first players to log in to the Verse when it goes live.

You know, that person might be right, because of how skewed their logic works: They think every criticism is hating. Everyone who i see criticizing SC actually wants the game to launch. The longer it stays in development hell, the longer it gets the “scam” status.

That’s how completely idiotic whiteknighting arguments are.

I am in the field of wanting SC to launch, being both a scifi and space themed games fan, but realistically I see the chances get lower every year that passes and the expectations(with Chris Roberts responsibility) are on the roof so I can see how a new game out of the gate wont get bad reviews(if it launches. There isnt a realistic way he delivers all he promised and there is too little to no hope of being 300m+ good. So my critisism its mostly on how they handled the whole project so far, creating a storm of expectations before getting in the design rooms to see what will work and how much time it will need. They took the easy way of overhyping in hope to raise even more cash instead

So, here’s the point: I agree with you, to an extent. I do think that the backers who lost hope at it launching it should be analyzing it with what they have. But we should NOT forget that this is a game that has no launch date, nor dismiss it as Oleg does with “arbitrary launch dates are meaningless” when they aren’t. Chris is treating SC as his playground because is an alpha, and he’ll use that excuse to keep doing that, but when it comes to a fully functional cashshop, his rimjobbers will say “it’s just a date, it already launched for me”. Does that make sense? Really?

Now, here’s something i think will surprise you: I DO think SC can be 250M good. It’s ground breaking. That’s “almost” enough. Their biggest issue will be content output.

But of course, that’s all assuming that SC becomes a game. We all want it to launch. I want it to launch, so it becomes a groundwork for new spacesims, like a remake of SWG.

What i CAN’T stand, is what is becoming: A pit for excuses and moneymaking. I can dream on my own, thank you very much.

Yeah the hater thing is brought up as a defense, as those who invested a lot into this game may not like the fact they are being strung along by something that may never be completed. And they just don’t want to think about that. It’s a bogus label thrown at us otherwise.

Sorry, Mr Schlag…maybe I shouldn’t have brought that up on your fine spearing. But it just seems the counter point I quoted misses that hoop perpetually (as you depicted), because it assumes there will be a time this game will be completed. When there seems to be a strong indication it will be stuck in a state of Alpha/Beta of stretch goals ad infinitum. /le sigh

I’ll just shut up now. :(

Always see people raving how good it is but every time I’ve looked into the game remotely it looks so boring. Like if I somehow developed sleeping issues and couldn’t fall asleep I’d prescribe myself a FFXIVIDMC subscription.

Lily Cheng

bravo bravo, you are the perfect description of someone who only observes games and never plays them. This is why people who review games aren’t allowed to until actually playing the game properly.

Bryan Correll

people who review games aren’t allowed to until actually playing the game properly

You really believe that? That’s so cute.

You certainly came to the right place on an internet MMO blog comment section for the #1 trusted and verified professional game reviews on the planet.

This article is literally about what people think are overrated MMOs, if you didn’t expect some hot takes I don’t even know what to tell you.

Bruno Brito

It’s Ark’s opinions on a piece that asked for his opinions. So, he’s not in the wrong here.

And if it eases you, I played it. It’s fucking boring. It looks exactly like Asian MMOs look ( anime-realistic pretty, full of overblown spell effects and completely generic ).

I deleted it from my HD after 5h playing.
