MassivelyOP’s 2019 Golden Yachties: MMO mascot of the year

MassivelyOP’s not-so-serious end-of-the-year awards continue today with our pick for MMO mascot of the year. If you’re wondering what the heck a Golden Yachtie is, you can get caught up with the first award. And the winner is…

Bread girl

Caravan Stories stole our hearts with its bizarre image of Bread Girl. We don’t actually know who she is or why she’s in the console/mobile MMO, but we’re here for this. “Bread Girl, as we like to call her, entranced the MOP staff for a good half-hour one day as we speculated about her motivations, life choices, and her extreme fondness for all things yeasty.” Yes.

I do have a runner-up, but it’s only because Justin turned in an entire column about playing a chicken in Lord of the Rings Online. And then I proofed it and ran it, complete with his subtitle. Chicken Justin.

Want to nominate another winner? Let us know in the comments, and don’t forget to check out our serious MMO awards while you’re at it.

I like big buns and I cannot lie,
And you other bakers can’t deny,
That when a girl walks in with a fresh muffin
She pulled straight from the oven
You get sprung, want to pull up tough
‘Cause you notice that crust was stuffed
Deep in the dough she’s kneading
I’m hooked and I can’t stop dreaming
Oh baby, I want to eat your bread bowl
And taste your sweet roll
The sous chef tried to warn me
But with that bun you got makes (me so hungry)

Baby got baguette!

Bread girl is a rorschach test. What you see in her is really about you.

Edit: don’t worry folks, it’s just… strawberry jam…! Mmmm-mmmm!

Is it too late to nominate Justin’s STAR TREK ONLINE mascot, Trippy, the space elf?

The thing about Bread Girl is that there’s a lot to unpack the longer you ponder the image.

For example: Warm, fresh bread is like a hug, yet here she’s hugging that loaf. Which begs the question of who is hugging whom. Is she hugging the bread in thanks for its warm, crusty, homely food-hugs? Is the bread hugging Bread Girl once more and she’s simply reciprocating?

So much mystery. So much intrigue. Astound us and enrapture us further, Bread Girl.

Not sure why, but I get a Dickens-era London vibe from the artwork.

Definitely. Heck, we can go further than that too…

The game is about caravans of people, always in motion. Constantly moving from one place to the next, never staying… those moments of time passing in slices, never whole… like a loaf of sliced bread. And with such constant motion, nobody is able to hug one another without being pulled away forcibly or left behind by their peers.
Bread girl is a constant though, everywhere you turn. Always hugging that loaf of bread as if she is the only thing keeping it together. A promise for everyone to partake in, if only for a moment, that there is always time to share in the simpler pleasantries of life…

Or, further still… in a world where we build cold steel atop the backs of simple beasts. Where we put underneath us the warmth of company and companionship… What if the bread she hugs so dearly is stale? Brittle, cold, ready to crumble if she lets go but so fragile that should she hug it too closely it will break upon her arms like the backs of the beasts we ride upon? A girl clinging to hope, that things won’t break in this world of unceasing steel and constant change? Desperate and scared that her lifeline will crumble away should she let her guard down… even as bread is handed out to others, in the hopes they might share with her something warm…

Truly, she is a work of the deepest philosophical art. The makings of a mind upon another level like that of Kojima…

… Or I’m reading way too hard into this, and somewhere along the line everything went pear shaped and I lost the plot.

I thought you’ll choose Mo :-) Mo deserve this one.

And what is it with bread girls/women? for years i see WoW players having crush for Myra Tyrngaarde, the dwarf bread vendor in Ironforge, there is even fan art for her, a cosplay!

Edit: BTW, who is that red lobster thing?!

I think of her as “that dwarf chick you sell your stuff to outside the AH in Ironforge”, but I guess i can see the appeal.

I heard that at one point in vanilla WoW (when Ironforge had the only Alliance AH), she was the NPC that bought more vendor trash from players by a huge margin.

Yeah, she is in perfect place to buy all the trash from the players :-)
