MassivelyOP’s 2019 Golden Yachties: Best MMO April Fools’ joke that wasn’t a joke

MassivelyOP’s not-so-serious end-of-the-year awards continue today with our pick for Best MMO April Fools’ joke that wasn’t a joke. If you’re wondering what the heck a Golden Yachtie is, you can get caught up with the first award. And the winner is…

AdventureQuest 3D’s 8bit NES game

Though I initially thought this was a joke, it wasn’t at all: Artix put up a Kickstarter for AdventureQuest 8-Bit: Dungeons & DoomKnights, billed as a “zeldavania” game for NES (or emulator on PC). But it was a real Kickstarter and a real game, and it funded on day one.

There’s a runner-up for this one: Remember when Funcom posted up the Conan Chop Chop April Fools’ day trailer? And then it turned out to not be a joke – it turned out to be a real game? And then it got delayed, but only so they could make it more like an MMO? We could use more jokes like this.

Want to nominate another winner? Let us know in the comments, and don’t forget to check out our serious MMO awards while you’re at it.

Year’s almost over, when are you folks doing Meme of the Year?

Probably stroke of Midnight on the 31st, when Schwag gifs one of those horrifying cape eyes from this years win onto a ball and has it fall into the mouth off that very same cape to announce it…

…actually, that has already made a Golden Yachty. o.O

They effectively could do this to the middle of January if they wanted.

So does GUILD WARS 2’s Adventure Box or GUILD WARS’ time-traveling future Commandoes or NEVERWINTER’s giant-sized “table-top” quests count?

They would not, and for this I would argue especially because the winner and runner up were both announced outside of the game and played as a straight joke… only to later come out.

Something similar would be the Minion battles in Final Fantasy 14.

The Terminator reference and the platform games for Guild Wars 1 and 2 respectively aren’t really that. They have been done in game, and the ‘April fools’ trailer for the Adventure Box was just that, a trailer.

Also, this is for specifically this past year. Both of those have existed for years before now, and doubly so for Guild Wars 1.

Likewise, same goes for Neverwinter. Recurrent events do not count.

Yeah, as I understand it both of the ones mentioned in the article sounded like straight up jokes. Right until they turned out to be for real. Kind of the opposite of the original Plants Vs Zombies, where they announced it and were totally serious, and somehow failed to notice that they put up the trailer on April 1st and everyone assumed it was a goof. O.O

Let us shed a tear again for The Secret World’s mankini, introduced to the cash shop on April Fool’s Day and then taken away from the players who bought it…
