MassivelyOP’s Weirdest MMO Stories of 2019: Black Desert’s unusual spokeswoman

Today we’re kicking off our countdown of Massively OP’s weirdest MMORPG stories of 2019!

Coming in at #5 on our list is…

Megan Fox on what Black Desert can do for self-esteem

American actress Megan Fox is apparently a big fan of Pearl Abyss’ MMORPG Black Desert. She’s also big in Korean cinema now. The two have combined to make her a bizarrely perfect spokesperson for the game, and ahead of the game’s launch on PS4 this summer, she starred in a lengthy live-action trailer that saw her transform into the Sorceress in-game (a class that not coincidentally already looks exactly like her). In an interview, she even discussed the game as a tool for self-esteem and visualizing a desirable life.

According to Fox, playing Black Desert is not unlike a form of meditation — a way for people to visualize what they want for their real life. “You get to discover the qualities about yourself that you want to enhance,” says Fox in the video. “Maybe, at the moment, it’s something that’s only on the screen, but you can realize it’s something you can bring to life for real.” This especially extends to young girls in Fox’s mind, positing that playing Black Desert allows them to create a world where they feel comfortable and powerful.

So that happened.

Stay tuned for another weird story tomorrow, and don’t forget to check out our annual MMORPG awards and our blooper awards!

I don’t get why it is weird? I have listened enough to Wheatus to know that sometimes cool girls like nerd stuff and I am told me that famous people occasionally get paid to endorse products.

I still don’t get why they did the really cool morph and then cut to the default Sorceress model. You can make a realistic Megan Fox IN Black Desert so… I just don’t get it.

Yes, I realize the software they used for the morph was totally different, but, come on…

First of all most of us gamers have spent our lives defending the fact that games do *not* affect who we are in real life. Every time a Politician tries to blame real violence on people playing video games we have to point out how they’re just games and don’t affect who we are in real life.

Next, getting lost in a fantasy world you can control and have a good life in does not help you in real life. It makes you continue to cling to that fantasy world and life, because real life is painful and chaotic and you can never control real life in the same way. Playing games moderately is not bad for you, as long as you know they’re video games and it’s not real, but what Fox is suggesting is very mentally unhealthy.

Megan Fox is clueless.

Megan Fox is clueless.

You mean she doesn’t get cast based on her keen intellect and sublime acting?

Yea, I had already tried to forget that.
