The Daily Grind: Capes or backpacks in MMOs?

31

2019 was a huge, huge year for MMORPGs. I’m mainly talking about how both Dungeons and Dragons Online and Guild Wars 2 got capes for the first time and how World of Warcraft saw its initial invasion of backpacks. Big, heady times for all games involved.

While we contemplate this New Age of Peace and Prosperity that has arrived, it’s time to dredge up the old debate over what looks better riding on your back. After all, we spend far more time looking at the rear than the front of our MMO characters, so that little bit of eye candy at the stern is important.

What do you prefer to wear on your back in your games: backpacks, capes, nothing, or something else entirely? Quickly, now, the fate of this New Age will be decided by our comments!

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

LOTRO has always done this right giving you different options including quivers and now music instruments. I usually do not go for capes there though. Normally I do a backpack or just let my weapon be slung.

Whatever fits the aesthetic of my outfit. Usually prefer backpacks over cloaks though.

Don’t believe the hype, those backpacks are made out of real Quaggans and produced in an Asura run sweatshop by underpaid, ill treated minions lol

Depends.

If the game is exclusively 1st person, I don’t care, as I won’t be seeing my character anyway. But if it’s exclusively 1st person there’s a good chance I won’t play it long; I dislike that point of view, so unless the rest of the game fits my preferences like a glove I will soon grow frustrated with it.

If the game forces a close 3rd person perspective, then neither; when my character coves a large-ish part of the screen I don’t want anything that would make it take even more space.

If the perspective is a further off 3rd person, including overhead or ortographic perspective, then whatever better fits the character, as determined mostly by the kind of gameplay I will be engaging in; if I’ll mostly be doing exploration and engaging with survival elements I prefer backpacks, whereas if I’ll be focusing more on combat then I prefer capes.

Scarves. Particularly of the long and flowing variety.

<— Alt-o-holic, so yes, both, neither..everything :) varies with the character.

I would like MMO's to stop cheaping out and taking the easy route and making it so it is only one or the other when in fact it should be any or all.
Cloaks are for protection from the elements and disguising your profile from a distance. Backpacks are for storing things. At no point should it have been an either or situation.

If Samwise can wear both I want to as well :)

I think the only back pack I’ve had was cosmetic (TSW). I don’t remember any backpacks in Anarchy Online. Don’t generally like capes but I am partial to the half cape, which I think is what Bree calls a butt cape. If capes could be made so they didn’t clip or disappear at odd times I think players would like them more, or if you could disable the cape portion of the outfit that would be good also. But hey, give people options….that’s always the best answer.
