Datamining offers tantalizing clue about Guild Wars 2 controller support

Ever wished you could play Guild Wars 2 from the comfort of your couch with the simplicity of a controller? That dream may one day become a reality, if a new, as-yet unused setting that noted Guild Wars 2 dataminer @that_shaman has unearthed is any indication.

The tweet includes a screenshot of code listing out keyboard configuration settings, but those settings are not stored in a local config file. However, that_shaman is resourceful and likely has tricks to poke around in the game’s working memory, and he noticed the new setting with yesterday’s patch.

Could this mean that Guild Wars 2 is headed to console? Possibly, as adding controller support to the PC version would be a reasonable first step toward a console port, and ArenaNet recently posted a job listing for “an unannounced 3rd person fantasy action console title.” A project of this scale is likely to take some time, so I wouldn’t get too excited just yet, but, that said, it’s certainly an exciting possibility.

Or maybe some programmer at ArenaNet really just wanted to play from her couch.

Update
Turns out the truth is something in the middle! “that_shaman, You’re good! I have no idea how you found this, as I tried to cover my tracks, but you are correct,” ArenaNet’s Jon Olson wrote on Reddit this afternoon. “I have been working on native controller support, as a side project in my own time. I’ve got a good deal of it all working, but it’s still got a further to go. My main goal is is to have accessibility in mind. If I can help just one person play the game that would would not otherwise be able to because of our current input controls, than I’ll be very pleased.” Well that’s wholesome!

I know someone who usually plays with a controller because it’s easier for them due to a war injury. Pretty cool.

Updated with the response from the Anet programmer responsible. :D

I’ve been playing GW2 with a controller for years. Xpadder + Action Camera mode always felt so natural. I was always under the impression GW2 could’ve made bank with a console port, but that was back before the game fell on hard times. :(

Gamepads and controllers are not just for consoles. It would be cool to see support for VR.

Man, they missed this ENTIRE generation, which was a pretty big boon for MMO’s overall, with tons of ports landing on consoles. That really feels like a huge miss if they’re seriously considering a console port, unless it was a technical issue with their engine that was the holdup (which would be VERY surprising). Not sure if they’d gain any benefit from a late launch, and it seems like the game would look pretty lackluster on next-gen hardware without some MAJOR art overhauls that I doubt are in the plans.

I’d be content to poke around with a gamepad while on PC though. Targeting seems like it’d be a bit iffy at times, but could be fun.

GW2 works really well with a controller and it would be a cool option for folks if they added native in game options for them.

I used the steam controller which meant a bit of faffing about to begin with getting it set up. Once I got my profile sorted it was pretty much a painless experience for the most part.

I’m genuinely surprised this hasn’t happened already. Granted i’ve not touched it since the Scarlet Briar cringefest but didn’t the game have like 5 combat buttons, a roll, a jump and a weapon swap for live combat? theres a lot of mmos been on consoles with more complicated controls, i honestly expected GW2 to have implemented it years ago.

Going to console would be a decent cash injection provided they don’t do another cross promotion with a dying company.

I always thought that GW2 was suited well for controller support. I’m actually shocked after all these years they have never implemented it.
