Rumor: Star Trek Online may be selling some lockbox ships in the regular store

If you have ever played Star Trek Online, you are no doubt familiar with the occasional flashing messages that so-and-so just won some mega-awesome ship from a lockbox. Such notices either serve to pressure you into trying your odds at lockbox gambling or brewing resentment against Cryptic for putting its best ships in an RNG hell.

Well, hell may be letting a few of its prisoners escape, if you catch my drift. A Reddit leak seems to indicate that the studio is about to take 10 ships that were previously lockbox-exclusive and put them on the regular store for purchase as a bundle. The ships include an original series Connie temporal operative escort, a Defiant pilot warship, a liberated Borg Juggernaut, and a warship variant of the Intrepid class.

The legendary ship package, which was datamined, has stirred up a lot of discussion among players (and was even stricken from the game’s subreddit by moderators). You can take a look at what these ships look like if you are curious or considering the future financial plunge to buying them.

About freakin time i say. I’ll pay them money straight up so long as i don’t have to play their damned scratch card lotto lockbox game.

I’ve a lot of history with Cryptic and for every good thing they do, they tend to ruin it with a dozen stupid things and/or lies, so we very much have a love-hate relationship.

But if this turns out to be more than a rumour I will pat them on the back and say well done as it will be the first non self serving genuinely decent move I’ve seen them make in a LONG time.

Bringing “some” of the lockbox exclusives to ther store for direct purchase is pretty momentus, and hopefully the start of something.. ofc we haven’t seen the pricing yet… so i’ll reserve judgement :)

agreed, lock box ships wouldve been ok if it was account bound. If the rumor is true these will be in the cstore, im willing to pay the price.

I would rather them rare(lockbox) ships double the zen store price, and ultra rare(R&D box) at triple or quadraple price and get rid of the lockboxes. Yes they would be expensive but people would get them guaranteed at these prices and dont forget occasional discounts

I don’t even necessarily think they have to be a regular thing, just an occasional thing. So long as people get a chance 2 or 3 times a year to buy a selection of normally lockbox only ships I think they would be super happy with that.

Pricing however will be the key thing, and they are likely to be high priced rather than other T6 comparatively priced vessels if their past history of pricing thing is anything to go by, they won’t want the ships being common and are likely to price them in such a way as to ensure they aren’t.

Lockbox monetization is bad enough as it is, but I’ve never heard of these broadcast messages when people get stuff before. Sounds terrible. Yay gambling I guess?

The writers and commenters here always bring those announcements up, which are indeed on by default. But they never mention that you can turn them off with literally 3 clicks.

The whole scrolling messages about big stuff people win happens in Mobile a lot. I think it’s left over from the days when percentages for lockbox draws weren’t shown. One thing I think they were going for was hoping people would think “Darn that person just drew the ship I want, people really are able to get it, let me go buy a bunch of lockboxes and try!”

You see people winning all this top tier stuff and it does make spenders want to try for it too.
