Black Desert’s new axe-wielding Guardian is now live along with her launch events

The Guardian has officially joined Black Desert on PC here in the west as of today, wielding her trademark axe and shield to kick some enemy butt. Kakao’s patch notes today introduce both the new character and her level-up events.

“Guardian has finally arrived in the world of Black Desert! Guardian wields a powerful battle axe and shield to crush her enemies without mercy. Also with her arrival you will be enjoying leveling up events and a drop rate boost! Tag the Guardian and share 100% of her EXP gained with another character!”

MOP’s own Black Desert columnist, Carlo Lacsina, did a full first impressions piece on his time with the Guardian on the global test server. “Overall, I really enjoyed the Guardian,” he opined last week. “The vibe I’m getting from both Reddit and the game’s chat is that folks are pretty excited with her, if only for the aesthetic. But beyond the aesthetic, she’ll be a solid class to main. If you like big hits that literally blows up the ground with every strike, this new class is right up your alley.”

Next, you’ll be prepping for the Guardian’s awakening – that’s coming next week.

If you’re not at all up for romping as a new toon, take a peek at the new Wacky Toshi’s Request event and start gathering up your Marni’s Stones.

Lots of fun. Especially the shield charge that obliterates everything.

She looks big, strong and mean. Which is good thing! o.O

She’s really cool. Her style is visceral and deliberate. Her attacks are meaty and weighty. I leveled her to 56 today and enjoyed it. I’ll still stick with my Dark Knight though. The Guardian just isn’t my style. Fantastic class, just not my bag.

Wouldn’t want to drop a bunch of money to switch at this point for inventory slots etc. Too bad actually changing mains is expensive and a pain. Progression past 60 really is non-existent. I’m a PvE player at heart. Guess I gotta wait for Crimson Desert to come out!

Another awesome character added to the world of BDO. The only issue I have with her is that they’ve put her in high heels, which kills the character’s immersion into the setting.

Always thought this game looked interesting . Is it very grindy or pay to win ?

Both actually. Still a fun game though

P2W largely depends on how competitive you want to be. If you just play at your own pace, it’s very viable to just progress and grind at your own speed and not feel the need to dump tons of money to progress. If on the other hand you wanna be competitive with the guys who have been in game since 2016 and grinding like madmen that’s pretty yikes.

Honestly you’ll feel more pressure to buy quality of life items like higher level pets, storage/bank maids, storage space, etc.

The game has been and always will be grindy and the usual line is it’s a marathon and not a sprint. If you try to think you’ll just max it all out in a month that just won’t work out well.

There are choices of which way you want to play. It’s perfectly viable to play with no P2W, as it is to whale yourself through it. If you do end up playing it, check out Ace Alpha’s youtube channel. She’s doing a series of videos showing players how to acquire everything in the game without paying any money, other than to get the base game.

As for grinding, that is also a choice now. You can quest your way to 61 without grinding at all, although there are a few quests that are grindy (kill 1,000 monsters). You can also AFK fight a dummy for experience.

Character has amazing combat animations. I was very sceptic about next Assassin’s Creed in viking setting but if the characters will be anything like Guardian – I’ll buy it without any hesitation.

(also it’s amazing how BDO is nearly F2P with the quality like that)

Most of the people in my BDO guild spent $100 a month or more on the cash shop. So not surprising they can afford to release the content they do free of charge as often as they do, at those income levels.

I don’t think I would categorize that kind of spending as normal for BDO.

Most people I’ve played with over the last few years might keep a Value Pack running or occasionally something like a Book or something running but in NA since the Central Market it’s been very easy to get things like costumes and the like for silver.

That’s not to say the people dropping that kind of money or even those that drop vastly more don’t exist or are entirely uncommon but just to say in my experience it’s far from the norm.

100 a month?

Clearly I am no longer the target market for MMO’s.

Most people I know personally it’s an extreme challenge to get them to buy into anything, even a $25 game package for BDO for example. They’re certainly not going to drop $100/mo on any game.

The thing is you have this ultra competitive crowd in BDO as well though and it’s not unheard of people spending that kind of money and much more so most people take it to mean you have to do that which is just a bit silly.

What really impressed me was the way guardian runs with her axe. When running she chokes up on it like a normal person would, then when in combat she slides the grip down to get better leverage/momentum when swinging. Attention to little details like that is just very impressive.
