The Daily Grind: Which MMO is just the worst about one-shotting?

29

Skyforge doesn’t get nearly enough attention from the greater MMO-playing public in my estimation, but it popped back into my field of view when a Redditor on the MMORPG sub related a tale of the time he and a friend were one-shotted most unceremoniously by a boss in the game.

“My prideful ego and confidence made me rush at the boss,” Makey writes. “He literally jumped in the air and SLAMMED back down and one shotted me and her. All you heard was me screaming ‘WHAT?!?!’ […] The awkward silence was more painful than getting one shotted, but after we laughed about it lol.”

I’m gonna be honest, I absolutely despise one-shotting in MMOs, whether it’s in PvP or PvE. I always feel like if players have no chance to react to something, it’s just an annoying prank by the developers. Jousting is annoying enough, but if the crits stack so high that even a tank is getting owned without warning? Meh. That’s almost as bad as when a rogue can stunlock you and kill you before you can break free.

I’m glad Makey could laugh it off. It’s a good attitude. I’d have been crankier! Which MMO would you say is just the worst about one-shotting?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

STO for sure now. Go into any group content and sit back and collect your reward AFK. It’s just crazy how OP some players are.

I’d say STO is pretty bad about that, both in PvP and PvE. One of my friends regularly uses me for a punching bag in duels. Not that i mind we both have a fun time. She’s got a way overpowered T6 temporal connie.

Pretty much what Ms. Bree Said. And all MMO’s I’ve played have this ridiculous overkill mechanic.

Yes, some are more easier to avoid that others. Such as, don’t wonder into zones where mobs are considerably higher level than you are. The more annoying and unavoidable examples though, are ones baked into the story. Or the consequence of mini-game failure. Or not showing up to the dungeon boss on time. And yes, there are those twinks in PvP, whaled, legit or otherwise. I could go on…

…but the more use and abuse of this mechanic, should be directly proportional to how special that place in Hell should be for developers who put that crap in. Just saying. >.<

I would have to say the worst game I have ever played for one shotting is Path of Exile. The devs don’t want you to know what killed you, they have even said that. They said it would change the way players played the game. It can get old though going from full health to dead in under a second from a mob that isn’t even on you screen though.

While the damage scaling does get a bit high in boss fights, a lot of the problem is (and they never tell you this) you need HP on every piece of gear and jewel. It makes a surprisingly huge difference.

In anything instance based most of them do this regularly. Worse, many of them assume that a 1-shot landing should wipe everyone in the area. See dungeons and raiding.

I’m all for good combat encounters in various places, and with various difficulty levels. What I detest more than anything in combat encounters is the mix of “Difficulty is based off 1-shot mechs, bloated HP, and min-max FOTM builds and gearing!”

That’s not difficulty, it’s an excuse not to play content until the meta fits what I want to play, if I so choose it is then worthwhile.

Destiny 2. The Pvp is godawful because it all boils down to having a specific gun that can just blast you in one shot.

Archeage was also pretty bad but that due to the level discrepancies mostly.

The worst part of D2 PvP is the unbelievable hissyfits people throw when ANYTHING counters shotgun apeing. Hopping around like a coked up *** fishing for one-shots is somehow the pinnacle of fun, skillful gameplay.

Not really in pve but BDO’s pvp has had a longrunning oneshot meta now which makes gear the deciding factor most of the time.

Hmm… from the games I play? I think they are all fair. I mean as BBB mentions below PoE has one shots, so does BnS, but in both games there is a tell. So, you are warned, and have the skills to avoid the one shot by blocking, stunning, etc. etc. That’s fair.

Jedi Fallen Order had some one shot attacks from big bosses. But again, there is a very quick tell, you might miss it so you have to watch carefully. Again, fair. Dark Souls that unforgiving pain in the ass? Fair.

So, what is unfair? There was a boss in a SWTOR Operation (raid) who had a mechanic which automatically killed members of your party. There was no skill or mechanic to keep it from happening. That is unfair.

“…so does BnS…”

Yes, you’re the Hongmoon Hero who moved an eclipses to save the Earthen Realm or something. But gets one-shotted by a lowly Ebondrake Assassin NPC because you happen to fail a stupid ass puzzle baked into the main story line after. Here’s an idea for consistency though: *Bleep!* Mushin and Yura, the Darklord should of sent one those ‘Sin’s to finish my character of from the get go. Then The Dark Realm would of gotten the extra real estate it was looking for without any Divine Mandate Ritual nonsense or what not. >.<

…and if you can, please translate this to Korean and send it over to NC's head office suggestion box in Seoul. Thnkx! /bleh

LOL! Nicely done and fair enough. I think only a few of us will know what you are talking about. Heh.

We will just cut and paste your reply in google translate and let the chips fall where they may. Although, NC probably has probably blocked emails from BnS west at this point.

Yes, I know…no need for spoiler alerts, as anyone playing through this game to it’s current conclusion would only know what I am yammering on about. Working as intended. <3

“Although, NC probably has probably blocked emails from BnS west at this point.”

…and /bleh!

But we should try sending it by carrier pigeon. Those work ingame and can’t easily be blocked. Especially when they drop a ‘message’ from the sky. o.O

Path of Exile even though GGG said at ExileCon they wanted to move away from such things

To be fair a lot of the time at least as far as boss fights go they do have a tell that lets you know a one shot mechanic is about to happen.

The problem is that there is so much visual chaos on the screen in any fight that it is impossible to see more often than not. To the point you would have to stop moving, casting or doing anything to be able to catch it which would mean you die anyway.

I do hope with POE 2 that they will honour that promise to not use them and I will just have to shrug when it happens in the meantime

100% agree. The visual clutter got way out of hand with Betrayal, and its gotten worse ever since. They need to clean that up in PoE2. The one-shot mechanics also need to go away, but I think a lot of that is due to how poorly the game is balanced. Don’t get me wrong, it can still be a fun game with the right build, but the game balance is so out of whack right now its not even funny.

I honestly think they’re trying to do too much with too little time. They need to simplify their League mechanics so that they launch with a complete league, not something that’s finally patched up half-way through the league. At least until PoE2 hits, then they can have 2 League teams staggered, giving each League 26 weeks of dev time, because this 13-week cycle has not been doing the game any favors over the past year and a half.

And for non-elite players, you just don’t have the 30 exalted needed to buy the gear to survive that one-shot. Normal people don’t have the time, the dedication, the knowledge, and the will to spend more time with the meta game than the actual game … to progress to that point where they might survive many of the one-shot mechanics.
Personally I love PoE right up to a certain point where I always get one-splatted, then I quit that league swearing to never again play that shit game… half a year later, ooooo league reset I gotta get in on this; I am sure it will be different this time.

Project Ascension like 2 years ago before they nerfed damage in PvP. Here’s some footage of my caster. Wasnt even 1shot oriented build:
