Astellia Online seems to be getting positive buzz following its Steam launch

So Astellia Online had a bit of a problem to start its Steam launch with its buy-in being classified as a non-refundable form of DLC. That wasn’t a great look. But now it’s starting to… actually build buzz! No, really! You can just see it poking around on Reddit, with people increasingly acknowledging that the game is actually not bad at all (a sentiment this writer in particular shared), and Steam reviews rolling in at “Mostly Positive” with most of the bad reviews being more about optimization or performance.

The game’s Steam Charts are also trending upward at this point, and while the peak is still around 1000 players, after about a week it’s still a positive trend to see, especially for a smaller game that more or less relies upon positive word-of-mouth to build up its playerbase. If you’re curious about the game’s future, you can check out our interview around the game’s Steam launch.

I never thought it was actually a bad game. Just not a good one. Sort of a perpetual “meh” for a game. Based on the game mechanics and reliance on Astells, I don’t think I was really in the target demographic for it.

Yes. It’s incredibly generic and bland.

This is the one with the puppet girl pets right? Or am I confusing it with another game?

If it’s that one then yeah it wasn’t a bad game at all but I wasn’t interested enough in it to even play out the whole open beta. As for performance I was able to run it with max settings at 4k with no problems but I have a high end system.

I do think there is an audience for this game though.

That could just be a licensing issue though.

These games that come over to the West are notorious for blocking.

I thought about getting it but it has a limited dungeon system which is just a reflavored stamina system. I refuse to support any game that includes one of these so I’ll be passing on this.

Is this a ‘we want you to play and love our game, just not so much.’ system?

It’s so they can sell you a cash shop item that recharges your dungeon entries faster. It’s the kind of thing you’d expect from a mobile game.

If the bad reviews are about optimization an performance mostly then that is a bigger problem than it just being a just OK game. No game will last if the performance is bad over a long time. This isn’t a game that just came out either. It was or is being shuttered in the country of it’s origin. It basically failed after a few months of launching the west the first time. This is the second launch in the west. There is no excuse for having optimization an performance issues at this point.

When I tested the game out if just felt clunky at best. It wasn’t a smooth experience. I did like that they tried something new with the pet system, but it just wasn’t enough to keep me going with it. I never wish to see any game fail, but at some point you have to realize that you have to fix what you have before trying to go forward with more new stuff also.

The game is very poorly localized, and there are some annoying optimization issues when it comes to performance, but overall the game is actually kinda fun. Concept of role-based followers is not new, but i feel that it works pretty well. The graphics are good lookin’, and the game actually has a degree of difficulty around it which i can appreciate.

I can’t comment on endgame or anything like that, but i’ve been dabbling in and out for a few months now, whenever i’m bored enough. The localization issues will most likely turn me off eventually (i can’t stand incoherent storytelling), but until then, i won’t be dismissing it.
