Multiplayer-optional ARPG Wolcen just launched on Steam with a huge day-one patch

It’s not an MMO, but you might want Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem on your wish-list anyway. It’s a new ARPG from WOLCEN Studio, clearly borrowing from titles like Path of Exile, Diablo and Grim Dawn. The game is an isometric but intensely graphic hack-and-slasher that’s been in an early access beta phase since last year and is slated to launch today with a character wipe, female toons, proper character customization, level cap bump to 90, extra chapters and difficulty modes, skill rebalancing, and improvements for animations and interface. Seriously, the day-one patch is extensive.

“You are one of the three survivors of the slaughter of Castagath. Rescued by Grand Inquisitor Heimlock, you were drafted into the Republic’s Army of the Purifiers at a very young age to be trained in the military academy and become perfect soldiers against the supernatural. You also had the chance to benefit from Heimlock’s occasional advice and training, which led you and your childhood friends, Valeria and Edric, to be called the Children of Heimlock. Recently, the Brotherhood of Dawn has infiltrated the Crimson Keep, a mysterious republican fortress lost among the northern deserts known as the Red wastes. While the purpose of the attack was unclear, the republican Senate voted a retaliation act against all known locations of the Brotherhood. Led by Grand Inquisitor Heimlock himself, troops are soon deployed on the Coast of wrecks, near the city state of Stormfall, to terminate a camp of Brothers. You are, with your two childhood friends, part of operation Dawnbane, under the supervision of Justicar Maëlys.”

As for multiplayer, it’s there in the form of optional co-op, but it’s by no means required. Launch was early, just a few minutes ahead of this post going live; the game is currently $29.99 just jumped up to $39.99 on Steam as of the launch.

Update
Apparently a whole lotta people are beating down the doors.

This looks like a good option for those skipping Diablo 4. For me, I’m not a ARPG fan anyway, but wish them good luck.

I keep reading it as Wolfcen somehow. O.o

Update! You can still get the game for $30 if you go through the game’s main website and choose to buy on Humble Bundle! And that gives you a Steam key, so no reason to spend the extra $10 on Steam. Not sure how long that will last but it’s there still now and verified as working :D

As an extra note here, a direct purchase from Humble Bundle will not get you the discount. You have to use the link on the purchase page of the game’s website (listed in comment above).

We’ve no idea if this is something they’re going to keep there for using that special link, or if the price simply hasn’t gone through the update there yet, or if it’s something else. But whatever it is you can still snag it for $30 there at the time of this writing, and we’ve no idea if that will soon change.

Newest update: The link given above was updated today and hiked up to the $40 price. Hopefully a few people saw this and were able to still sneak in with the $30 price while it lasted, but the discount is no longer there today.

Oh shoot this was on my wishlist. Arg I wish I bought it before the price hike. Ah well, I can always wait for a future sale one day. I don’t really feel like fighting everyone for a place on the online server day 1 anyway.

I don’t care about release day hype though I’m fine with waiting to play.

Bizarrely it doesn’t look as shiny as the initial release, the fancy waving grass and some other effects appear to have been dropped somewhere along the line. Still, it does look a bit good though (the game not the gfx).

…I wouldn’t be surprised if they bring those back eventually. Right now, from the update…that looks untenable until they get population/server stability. o.O

How does it handle loot? Is it easy to filter (assuming it’s a PoE-esque pinata)?

Wolcen’s sub-reddit currently indicate 8k users *online* and 100k viewers on Twitch – which is comparable to AAA game launches. It seems the game is very popular – which is well deserved considering they have the best character creator among aRPGs I’m aware of.

57,000 currently trying to play, or at least have it open according to the Steam.

Managed to get 30 minutes in the game before a crash put me back in connection hell.

Just make an offline character to learn the ropes, then a few days later once the servers are stable go online.

You guys are missing the real Wolcen story:

If you put a beard on the male character and then switch to female, you can have a girl with a beard from Wolcen

…that’s interesting. This makes me really wish it’s not actually a bug so players can actually roll characters that don’t fall into gender norms. Advancing the CC by leaps and bounds, IMO.

That price jump cross-out edit made me laugh.

SkillUp is big on this game. I dunno. Looks like a pretty generic game to me, though I admit the environment design is top-notch.

Game is relatively generic, but i think the appeal is that it borrowed a lot of good features from popular ARPGs and put them in one place.
