Blade & Soul Korea announces ‘Frontier World’ alternate servers and continues its Force Master spec tease

Don’t get me wrong, Blade & Soul players here in the west are getting some nice stuff with the next update, but the Korean edition of the game is getting some potentially envy-inducing things. Case in point: a new server type that’s part of its Unreal Engine 4 upgrade that apparently makes some intriguing adjustments to the game beyond the visual.

According to reporting from MMO Culture, this new “Frontier World” server type will bring with it a revamp of overall character growth and the game’s battle system, promising “different systems” from the existing Live World base servers and a new combat system, though the video footage embedded in the report doesn’t really provide many context clues on what’s changed.

Blade & Soul Korea is also continuing to tease its third spec for the Force Master class, which readers will recall was part of its initial UE4 upgrade reveal. The spec’s name is roughly translated to “Sky Seer” and focuses on large amounts of AoE damage at a distance. Just in case you missed that initial tease, it’s been embedded below.

Sounds like the alternative server is a problem because it will divide the playerbase in a weirdest way possible. Nothing should be impossible to backport to existing player progress, and if something is, then it’s time to make a new game.

It is going to be fun. But… when will it finally make it to the west? Under normal circumstances, I would say May. But, as this is a new server I have no idea. I would love to see it during the summer but I think it will be next fall at the earliest before we are playing BnS UE4 in the west.

Think about all of the localization they have to do. They aren’t using the old game. They are developing a new one.

Check this out though. It just might be worth the wait if you love combat and the prospect of an open worlds with real housing and crafting.

NC soft really needs to come up with a new business model for NA/EU. Q4 was awful across every game. The P2W monetization type is not working here.

So yeah, it sound like they’re really coming up with a “Classic” and “Retail” server types. O.o

Heh. I had the scoop! Too bad I was scooped by other ‘tubers. Lol.

I don’t mind the Frontier Server setup as it keeps the old BnS clean and clear of the big issues to come.

It reads like it might be a sort of… ‘soft beta’ server for it that is open for everyone to me. A way to test and work the kinks out on a larger scale without negatively impacting those happy to wait for a wider release.

Even calling it a ‘Frontier’ server feels like an acknowledgement of it being a testing server of sorts. Exploring things before the frontier is ‘settled’ so to speak!

There is no question that’s what it is. It is a smart way to handle this transition. Long term, I suppose they will build more and more on Frontier if it is working as they hope and players will gravitate to UE4 because of all it offers.

The thing is, having your characters go through all that content again while starting at level 1 could be a hard sell though. Players will love the upgrade server no doubt, but it will come at a big price.

How good is B&S leveling for it to warrant a Classic server, really?

…way, way better than WoW currently, lol.

But that’s not what we’re really talking about. Rather we’re comparing another game (WoW) that will have the old and new game server types. But in this case, the current Retail of B&S will give way to a new UE4 server type. So instead of having a server move back to a time where the game was in it’s infancy, we’re getting a “A Realm Reborn” (FF XIV) type server where the game will significantly moved forward. Making the current Retail, “Classic” and the new one “Retail”…so to speak. :)

I’m not talking about WoW retail leveling ( which is godawful ).

What i remember from B&S leveling: extreely linear, the maps are small and freedom of exploration isn’t that huge. The maps are mostly instanced too.

Yes. And that is a big part of what is going to change. The story beats and leveling will probably remain linear but it will be a part of an open world. No more instances, for the most part, aside from dungeons etc. So if you want to go exploring you will able too. The maps will be open to discovery.

Keep in mind the devs mention their vision of the open world in an interview, but a lot still has to be taken with a grain of salt as many players filter and translate what is said for us. Heh.

It’s a good point. It is flipped. What we are playing now will be Classic and the Frontier Server will be “Retail”.

It might put some players off, sure. And those who have the latest and greatest gear will not be happy to essentially lose progress to play UE4.

But, given the other things that are supposed to be a part of the Frontier, new game mechanics etc., they will definitely have a look. And if the game is well optimized and has a great new look, I think most will overcome their issues with starting over.

The good news is that nothing you have done to date will be lost. So, you can play on your old toons and then take a break to play on the Frontier.

We will see though. There are a lot of hurdles yet to go.

Thanks for explaining all this as ever! /bows
