Final Fantasy XI is hiring a community planner in Japan, hinting at bigger news

"Maintenance mode" is a fake idea

We all become.

Something seems to be afoot for Final Fantasy XI. There was obviously reason to speculate that something was afoot when the February 27th fan gathering was announced, and even though that event was cancelled due to the overall coronavirus shutdown for Square-Enix staff from Japan, the announcement was still promised to be incoming. Now, the game’s Japanese Twitter has announced that the studio is hiring a Community Planner to plan, manage, and broadcast an event.

What in the world could all of this be about? It seems like this would be far too much buildup for just the usual string of monthly updates, and the current development team has said multiple times that they would love to do more for the game if the subscriptions are there to justify it. Could it be that the game is getting another set of add-on scenarios like the Abyssea series, or even – improbably – another full expansion? We don’t know yet, but this posting certainly does hint strongly at the possibility.
