The Daily Grind: Is there an MMORPG you’ve never played and probably never will?

A while back, a few MassivelyOP staff were chit-chatting about alting in MMOs, specifically in Star Trek Online. During the discussion, it occurred to me that I really didn’t have a foundation for understanding their complaints about alts in that game – because it’s one of the few MMORPGs I’ve never, ever played. And I probably never will.

Now, I bear it absolutely no ill-will, and in fact, because of my fondness for some of Cryptic’s other titles, I find myself rooting for it all the time. But I grew up on Star Wars, not Star Trek, and the franchise just has no emotional pull for me to make me want to play it over something else. Then again, I didn’t have any emotional connection to superheroes whatsoever and kinda still don’t, but I am still in love with City of Heroes the game. So maybe I should just get over that hurdle?

Is there an MMORPG you’ve never played and probably never will? And why?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Star Wars Galaxies. Even though i am a Science Fiction/Fantasy/Gaming nerd I hate the crap that is Star Wars.

As for new games I know I’ll never play Star Citizen. Not my thing

Pick a gankbox, any gankbox. (Except EVE, my first one, that I really, really tried repeatedly over several years to ‘get’.)

Many of them, which I am not proud of. I do try to give as much games a chance as I can. Even the ones I did not like before – for example I tried playing ESO recently after few years but could not play it for more than few days due to boring stories which are not connected to each other in a seamless way, class and skill combination which I never liked (I tried many skill combinations and could not, for example, create physical ranged class that I liked), poor performance and extremely depressing desaturated color palette. Not to mention the awful community who does not even want to bother and rez you in public quest or dungeon area because “mah precious Soul Gem, I don’t want to waste it on random nobody”.

I have played Ultima online and will not play it again. For me I just don’t like how long it takes to raise any skill on that game without subscription. 😔

Any game that is primarily PVP based, or where PVP is “required” at max level. Blade & Soul, EVE, tons of others.

Maybe I meant Black Desert, or maybe I meant both of them. I’m not completely sure which is which, so clearly I’m not the target market for either of them.

Bless Online
Any PVP focused MMO.

Also, as much as I hate saying this, because I backed the Kickstarter, I probably won’t ever play Star Citizen.

It’s impossible for it to ever be a level playing field for someone who doesn’t have a lot of $$$ to buy the most powerful ships. And, I’m not sure how the PVP will work, but I’ll bet it’ll be open PVP.

I’ll still be getting Squadron 42, the single player game, IF IT EVER COMES OUT.

Any game with open, non-consensual, PVP. I am not your noob to gank.

Loads of MMOs, really. I’d say the ones that come to mind most are:

EVE Online – It’s fun to keep track of it, but it’s really not my jam. Tried it out on a friend’s computer for a minute, since he always had it running in the background while he played RuneScape.

EverQuest – I have a choice of playing the current version where most players are at endgame and supported by a horrible company, or EQ1999, a version of the game that is far too archaic for my tastes.

Star Citizen – No thanks.

Black Desert Online – Looks gorgeous, but I’ll wait for Crimson Desert. If BDO had more PvE content and less grinding, I’d be more interested. It just reminds me of RuneScape if questing was removed.

WoW because elves and orcs. Any PVP game where fighting is non-consensual, all isometric view games.
