The Daily Grind: Are you a Jumpy McJumperson in MMOs?

Ah... huh.

When you were young, you found your purpose with the spacebar of your computer keyboard. Suddenly, your characters were slipping the surly bonds of gravity to propel themselves sky-high in beautiful leaps of wonder. This power, this… rush of majestic jumping became your sole purpose in any MMO that you encountered. After all, those hops communicated so much: Your eagerness to progress, your happiness at the state of the world around you, and that you may have missed a dose of your medication that day.

Jumping. We all do it. But some of us do it, like, a lot. Are you all about leaping like a gazelle in MMOs, and if so, why do you do it? Are you still carrying forth the theory that hopping confuses raid bosses and decreases their damage output, or is it just to relieve stress, like popping bubble wrap?

As an extra question, which MMO offers the most satisfying jumping experience?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

City of Heroes, best jumping ever. :D Super Jump on every toon!

SWG, not so much. :(

I had super jump on I think three characters, and only because it was the best fit for them for story purposes. I do NOT like falling, not even in simulation. I’m fine with heights. But even in a game like Warframe where the Warframes are literally and completely immune to fall damage I have to close my eyes before jumping off of a high ledge.

LOL, I jump (or bounce) so much my nickname could be “Tigger.”

FO76 I routinely jump off of any high point just to see how far I can fall….

When fighting, I often jump, (melee can’t hit you), oh yes, like most folks I have the perk cards, serums and rocket powered jetpacks to “float like a butterfly, and sting like a……50 caliber machine gun.”

GW1 taught me to never play a game without jumping….never have since.

I think it was in Aion, or perhaps WOW where my character would do a forward flip / roll when jumping, so I would often be seen running through the world endlessly flipping over and over as I made my way across the land.

Looking at the reactions in this thread I think I understand now why I have difficulty making friends in online games…because I’m “the bad guy.”

No. I haven’t been 2 years old in over 40 years. I breathe a sigh of relief every time I log into GW1 and don’t have to deal with that kind of BS or the asinine jumping puzzles that devs inexplicably feel is necessary to include in the game.

I wish all MMOs have this feature, right-click on the jumpy person, then choose hide them from my view for the next 10 minutes, because they are so annoying and they know it.

As soon as they see someone they start jumping around them over and over .. there should be a cool down on jumping!

I don’t do the jumping and I am generally annoyed by those who do. On the SWTOR Star Forge server there is someone on the republic fleet who runs all around the main ring jumping and jumping and jumping. I have on many occasions wished I could stick my virtual booted foot out and put an end to it. The grand kid, on the other hand LOVES to jump around and parkour off things I’m sure the devs never intended for us to be on.

Me: If You do that you are gonna die
Him: I’m not gonna di…….. (splat)
Me: How many of my credits do you think you’re going to need to waste today?
Him: (every single time…) It costs credits when you die?!
Me: sigh… let me know when you get tired of that and maybe your mother will let us finish the mission…..

Admittedly, I don’t understand these seemingly hyper-active people who jump everywhere, all the time, in MMOs. I do everything in my power to remove myself from their jumpy space.

We have FPS players to blame for the bunny hoppers.. they started it all lol

And no I am not a bunny hopper, indeed the only time i do it is when i am INTENTIONALLY trying to annoy someone :)

When I see people bunny hopping, it is the only time I truly wish for free pvp with full loot.

bunny hopping in games is due to hyperactivity of the prefrontal cortex. could be solved with some inhibitory neurotransmitters such as serotonin and γ-aminobutyric acid. though I’m leaning toward more invasive technique, far more efficient, but it’s delicate to convince people with compulsive disorder, it might trigger an impulsive one too.
