Reign of Terror rebuilds Diablo 2 Lord of Destruction in ARPG Grim Dawn

If Diablo III’s latest update isn’t doing it for you, how about a little Diablo 2… in your Grim Dawn?

One of my guildies (thanks Kiry!) sent this my way last night: It’s a mod called Reign of Terror, a Diablo 2: Lord of Destruction module specifically built around the Grim Dawn Forgotten Gods expansion. The player devs say the mod includes the complete set of acts rebuilt, with all maps and mobs and quests, all seven classes, all the original Diablo 2 items, the hireable mercenaries, new and original shrines, the Pandemonium event, the secret cow level, and new secret areas too. It’s even got its own Wiki.

“Multiplayer works but it is not fully supported yet so keep that in mind in case you decide to play MP,” the author says. Of course, you’ll need to make sure you’ve got Grim Dawn, its Forgotten Gods expansion, and the Ashes of Malmouth expansion, which may set you back more than just buying Diablo 2, especially if you don’t wait for a Steam sale. But where’s the fun in that?

They did an amazing job on this. If you enjoy ARPGs, then I would recommend it. If you do decide to try it out, I would *highly* recommend downloading the main mod outside of their launcher, as I found the download speeds excruciatingly slow; 0.1-15MB/s for 6.5GB.

The game fells like a perfect blend of D2 and GD, since its still using a number of mechanics from GD, but it also brings in some stuff from D2, and the pacing makes it feel a bit more like D2.

Oh this sounds very intriguing. I’ll need to watch the video when my phone battery isn’t all but dead XP

A few thoughts on this. My first is, damn, I hope Blizzard doesn’t have it taken down. My other thought is that after the disastrous remake of Warcraft 3, this might be the closest we get to a D2 remaster. The video looks amazing. I’ll keep an eye out for a sale on the two expansions to GD I need to run this.

I hope Grim Down devs took a note from an explosive popularity of Wolcen and GD2 will have less ugly visuals and animations.

The graphics are not ugly and they fit the world theme. If graphics are the only thing that matters to you then that’s just to bad for you. Do you even know what the world story of GD is I wonder?

Why is the picture for the embedded Grim Dawn video about making Diablo II levels in a mod an upskirt picture of an anime girl?

These games are supposed to be “creepy” in a different way than that.

That image made me think that my understanding of Grim Dawn was way off base.

If anime has taught me anything…

Its that the grimmest of dawns is when you see up an anime girl’s skirt. Everything goes downhill after that.
